I don't use a Office program but I still wonder how Microsoft Office sells so well when every place, (forums) I go some one post that a free office program is just as good. If they are just as good why do people buy Microsoft Office???

I think the overwhelming majority of home users who use Microsoft Office likely obtained it using less than legitimate means. In the case of this forum, most members who use the software at home are doing so using their Technet subscriptions.
For me personally, I don't really have a reason for having Microsoft office on my home computer. For my money, it doesn't provide enough benefit to make me want to part with my money to legally obtain MS Office. And since I'm not one to pirate or steal software, I'd rather use an alternative product that costs me nothing than pay for the industry standard application.
As another person mentioned, Microsoft includes SA licenses (software assurance) into their released figures. For example, my office has about 300 seats for the OS and Office. Less than 10% of the workforce is using Windows 7 and less than 5% are using Office 2010....but in Microsoft's eyes we have 300 copies of each purchased and deployed.

Not sure where you get your stats from but trust me, a lot of people are actually purchasing it in legitimate ways. I've done some retail work and trust me, there are lots of everyday joe smoe purchases. Also, students can get a discount on the professional plus at a substantial discount. My daughter did
And let’s not forget the Microsoft Home Use Program that’s offered to the military and government workers. So yeah, I think there are more legitimate "home" users then you might think
Is there piracy, of course? But take this in consideration..... a lot of everyday "home" users whom we so eagerly dismiss as uneducated don't know "how" to pirate and will thus pay the exorbitant prices we decry as foul rather than jump through the hoops just to get a pirated copy.
Example - I tell people all the time about the "free" Anti-Virus software Microsoft offers, yet they look at me like I'm speaking rocket science when telling the where to download it from and hold on to that paid program like they're holding on for a breath of air
Yes, there’s always exceptions to the rule, but…

While it certainly doesn’t come close to Windows 7 in terms of uptake, Office 2010 is indeed enjoying its fair share of market success, having earned the crown of Microsoft’s fastest selling productivity suite to date.
At the 2011 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, Microsoft revealed that it’s close to selling 16 million copies of Office 2010.
