I added a Microsoft statement to the Ars article in regards to the lower build number. If you haven't figured it out yet, use the official build.
Is this supposed to be like a replacement to Windows OneCare, because I think it's just Windows Defender modernized and improvised.
Read the article. OneCare is being killed off. This is the free solution from Microsoft.

No, Windows Defender is not a firewall, it's antispyware. Windows Firewall is a firewall. MSE is antimalware, which includes spyware.
Do we still need to run Windows Defender?
No, MSE turns off Windows Defender for a reason.

Just downloaded the 'official beta'. went smoothly. have a torrent version on my laptop. so far so good:)
