Microsoft: Parents Need to Stay Involved in Their Kids’ Online Activities

A variety of tools from Microsoft, including Windows 7 Parental Controls, Windows Live Family Safety 2011, and Zune and Windows Media Center family safety settings allow parents to control what online content their offspring can access based on their age.

However, although the tools are there, not all parent are taking advantage of them, reveal the results of a MSN poll designed to get insight into the views and actions related to online safety from children (ages 14–18) and their parents.

And we wonder why so many kids are targeted on the net.

Some parents really should not have kids. especially the 87% of parents who don't check up.

I personally would be more concerned about the lack of parental oversight when it comes to kids under 13, but at least this is a step in the right direction.

I've always felt that parental controls are a bit of a cop out. Parents use them to restrict online activities without actually taking the time to explain to their kids why certain things that you find online are bad. If you leave that discussion and understanding out of the equation, then the kids are just going to a) find a way around the controls, b) go to the "forbidden fruit" first chance they get on a unprotected computer, and or c) go to the "forbidden fruit" when they turn 18 anyway.

Teach your kids right from wrong at an early age, so that by the time they step into the Internet, they don't need parental controls to do the job for them.

Help and Support is slow, unresponsive and won't stay online.
Help and Support is slow at best. I put it online in Settings but it goes offline. I use in it Paint and Serif DrawPlusx4 but it makes the programs unresponsive.
