Since you are going with the exact same edition as likely came preinstalled on the laptop you shouldn't run into any problem using the key on the sticker. The one main difference is simply adding the SP1 into the mix. If for some that should fail to activate with any invalid key problems then you would opt for the key from the download itself.

I do the same thing with Microsoft Office. I install Office, and then the latest Office service pack....THEN turn on automatic updates. I think I had maybe 5-6 automatic updates for all three applications combined. I like it nice and clean like that. It's an obsession....LOL
I like to keep automatic updates off until I'm ready too. Depending on the OS I'm installing, I also install the latest version of DirectX, Dot Net Framework, Internet Explorer, Media Player, Silverlight, and finally Microsoft Security Essentials. MSE turns auto updates on when you install it so I leave it for last.

In windows update it should show up as (KB976932).

Doing a winver on my System it shows:

Microsoft Windows
version 6.1 (Build 7601:Service Pack 1)

That's the confusing part. I do not have KB976932, yet my win ver shows "Ver6.1 (Build 7601:Service Pack 1, V.721)"

The next line says : Evaluation Copy, Expires 8/31/11 6:59. ???

Pre ordered and installed from Cd bought From newegg when it was first released.

Hello Meebers,

You have the SP1 RC (Release Candidate) version installed. This is not the final SP1 version.

You will need to uninstall the SP1 RC, then install the SP1 RTM (final version) afterwards.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Ok, I stand corrected. Did find "Win 7 SP1 RC Wave 1 for X64 (Kb976932) dated 11/13/2010 installed. This is not visible in the "uninstall or change program" line up. I guess my next try would be the elevated command "wusa.exe/uninstall/Kb:976932"?

Is this going to screw with all my programs etc?? I did notice a lot of SP1 updates after this, assume the uninstall will remove all of that and then after the RTM version will update whats left?? Tx for the help here. MikeG

Assume the expiration date was referring to the RC release??

Meebers,

If you did not use the Windows 7 SP1 Disk Cleanup Tool while you had the SP1 RC installed, then you should be able to uninstall the SP1 RC using either method.

If you did, then the only option would be to do a clean reinstall of Windows 7, then install the SP1 RTM afterwards.

This is also the case with the rtm where you may want to backup the backup before clean up in case you have a need to uninstall the finished version.

Meanwhile the one and only update now seen since the SP1 release is the Security update for the 64bit W7(KB2475792).

When looking for the service pack simply click on the "See also: Install Updates" at the bottom left when going into the Control Panel>Windows Updates. It will be listed there as "Service Pack for Microsoft Windows(KB976932)" without the quotes of course When looking under the Microsoft Windows heading there it should be right near the top being only one of the few recent updates.
