I think for some people, it will probably improve their system performance quite a bit, for others, the improvements my be negligible. It probably depends on what software you have and how recent your copy of Win 7 is.
But I am interested in people posting their positive/negative experiences with it.
Either way, I'm going to wait a couple days at least since:
A) I'd like to see if any major bugs emerge.
B) The entire planets Windows systems are, at this point (and probably for the next few days), focused on MS headquarters.
The only things I see is that my screens pop a little faster in IE but I also noticed an increase in memory usage well after the install and startup of Win7. I will look further to see what might be running.
It also reinstalled the basic default items in my Favorites when I open Explore.
I can report a very significant performance increase on my end. I'm using Windows 7 Pro x64 with a i7 @4GHz, 6GB. Everything just feels 'zippy' now. Hard to explain, but everything from program loading to explorer navigation feels A LOT faster. Browsing through photo folders is great now. I've yet to test games, but I'm already happy with this SP.
Bit of nightmare here!
Last night, whilst downloading got to 95% (only needed 61mb) and had power cut!
When power came back restarted PC, tried update again, would not go past 0%!
This morning tried again, still stuck at 0%.
Fortunately had a disk image and restored that.
Ran the update again, been downloading 61mb for 2 hours, and been stuck at 95% for almost an hour!
What to do?
I guess I should go into more detail here, but I haven't had too much time to test drive it yet: On system with a mechanical HDD. - Internet browser performance is up across the board (IE, Firefox, Chrome) for loading at fast feel - Windows Explorer is WAY faster for browsing directories with a large amount of files or those with thumbnail previews. I would go as far as saying 2-3x as fast (maybe more for the huge # of files). - Booting/shutdown is about the same - I could go on about individual programs, but everything is faster. WMP12 has like doubled in efficiency. Office productivity is faster, but it already pretty fast. - Control panel and system related setup tasks are much faster. Nice job MS.
Tried to download the update last night. gave up after 2 hours. Sat at 0% for 30 mins then downloaded 90MB in a couple of minutes this morning. Install took 30 mins no problems except I lost all my restore points (maybe that was something else. I notice an event log error on VSS when I upgraded Paint .Net yesterday). Also had the .Net optimization service hogging cpu for about 15 mins. Apart from the first reboot booting seems faster and the whole intall seems zippier. But maybe thats wishful thinking.
I have just noticed IE8 is now show Protected Mode is OFF and I'm unable to turn on.
I have set UAC to default and also set TweakUAC to silent mode.
Any suggestions?
Solved
I deleted the IE icon from desktop and went to Programs files and found IE and selected to make a new icon on desktop. After that the IE8 desktop icon will start IE8 in Prtected Mode ON.
It also works with my taskbar icon correctly.
