This post is strictly for academic purposes.
Around a 100 post-SP1 hotfixes- not official or authorised or released by MS of course- are already known to exist. So for those complaining about numbers, thats the way to go. And yep, I would rather have them than not have.

I've got people who have not installed SP1 yet (and won't do so until I visit).
Questions that enter the mess we call my mind:
- Will these new Updates show up on their systems?
- Are there 2 versions of update, pre-SP1-post-SP1?
- And if not are non SP1 folks stuck in update limbo?
- If the updates do show up and they were to install them would that cause an issue with finally installing SP1?
I'm glad releasing updates is not my job!

If the updates are posted to the Windows Update server after SP1 then they will appear even after installation of SP1. You may sometime find (as I have in the past) that while there is an SP update available some updates don't appear as a just in case they're included in the SP.

Release the patch now and then include it in service pack 2.
At some point Microsoft has to say thats it, no more updates or patches in this service pack release after this date. If they didn't the service pack would likely never get released. The amount of code in the OS and the ever increasing amount of people trying to find holes in it, means it is going to be updated and patched on a continuing basis. Microsoft does screw up from time to time, but to be honest its not all their fault. You can't test for a vulnerability that you don't know exists. The bad guys are always looking for new wrinkles in the software. How does that saying go, "always expect the unexpected".

Why are you complaining?! Would you rather have Microsoft simply not care for its products? These updates, be grateful for them, it shows Microsoft cares for its products and isn't ignoring the vulnerabilities that could put you at a risk.

If they do not install SP1, i guess the only update they will receive is the SP1 itself.
Some of the updates that might be post-SP1 might show up aswell but this will depend on config.
There's two kind of updates, whilst you will not get some of the post-SP1 supposed to be real post-SP1 ones.
As exemple if you do grab a SP2 update on MS download center, you'll be able to install this one, and i do not think installing SP1 afterward would a real prob because it will surely make a difference between pre & post install, but it is not really advised to do so.

Part of the impatience with updates/service packs stems from the enormous fuss that these create- they wont install or they'll break certain things. It would help if MS could come up with error messages in plain english so the user would know x file is missing or y is corrupted etc.
Then again, its a fact that windows is so highly tinkerable that user-created issues are responsible for a lot of problems.
