IE9 has just released, why are Microsoft saying they'll drop support for Vista? It's kind of an over-mining decision when it's going to be years before it even comes out. Windows XP had support for IE6, 7 & 8. Why can't Vista have support for IE8, 9 & 10? Some Internet Explorer users on Vista might be a bit annoyed...

You just answered your own question.

By the time it comes out, chances are it will ship with Windows 8, therefore Vista will be (from the Microsoft upgrade cycle point of view) the new XP. The reason XP got "special treatment" was simply because it was 10 years between Vista and 7.

I know that it will take time, I'm just saying how are they even going to know it won't work with Vista?

I don't think it's so much a case of "it won't work on Vista" as if it works on 7, then it will probably work on Vista if they allowed it to.

I think it's more a case of they are choosing not to, because by the time it ships, then Vista will probably be 2 generations behind (Ie. Behind 8 and 7) much the way that XP was 2 generations behind for IE9. It's a marketing ploy designed to encourage people to upgrade.

So if I still use IE that means I don't know much about computers?

Better? Someone who knows a lot about computers knows how to research and stay current with their information. IE8, IE9, etc are perfectly fine to use. We aren't living back in the IE6 days when you could make a case that other browsers were better. As it stands today, the choice in browser comes down to personally preference. Firefox and Chrome aren't "better". They are what they are, and all three are fine. People use what they are comfortable with.

Linux CENTOS 7 / various Windows OS'es and servers

Hi there
If people want to continue to use old OS'es etc -- and there are LOTS of valid reasons for doing so -- such as perfectly good hardware (scanners, printers etc etc) which won't run on newer platforms then they can run these ad infinitum as Virtual Machines.

With computer processing power and memory getting pretty powerful these days even on fairly small computers then running a Virtual Machine is not a difficult option.

I often have an XP virtual machine running under vmware on a SMALL NETBOOK.

Cheers

What is so different with Windows 7 and Vista? They have both the same codebase and kernel so its pointless not to release IE10 for vista since it could technically run IE10.

That's why, in my original post, I make the comment about then wanting people to upgrade to 7. That's the only thing that makes sense. From a technical standpoint, I don't see why IE10 wouldn't run on Vista; given the two (Vista and 7) are so similar.

I think it all comes down to marketing.
