Another thing is that most retailers and shops have stopped selling Windows XP (all editions) as it's scheduled to be phased out (End of Life) by April 2014. I'm sure a few places still sell it, but all hardware in stores (best buy, frys, wal-mart, sam's club, etc) are pretty much windows 7 home premium.

    Hi there

Of course there are literally ZILLIONS of computers out there running XP and these might not be upgraded for ages yet -- there are still a lot running W2000 as well.

I'd probably surmise a guess that it will still take a year or two before W7 actually overtakes XP in the amount of people actually USING it.

The biggest push is when large companies start upgrading their computer gear again -- the next cycle is a bit overdue --recession etc etc but things appear to be moving in the correct direction so next year should see significant activity on that front.

    Cheers

Interestingly enough, Microsoft makes most of it's products on things other than Windows. Seems Xbox and Office are the winners, with Windows profits actually declining as PC sales are slowing.

Does anybody have the feeling Windows 7 will be the next XP? 10 years down the road MS will be battling to pry it from our cold dead fingers.

    END OF LIFE IT ALREADY

It is really time to end of life XP. Its time to start stripping the legacy crap from
windows altogether!!! They cannot release windows 8 with XP still around. Nobody even
in developing countries are running around with a 10 year old cell phones are they? If
all the original iphones quit working tomorrow would it hurt or help ipad 2 sales????
Seriously MS needs to grow a pair, I mean Bill did it, he rules the f*cking world, but
it's still a stalemate as long as they keep worring about backward compatability. Those
people (you know who you are) are slowing down progress for the rest of the world. x86
in 2011 is just pathetic and that's why people blame microsoft for setting back
computing 10 years. MS is not the problem!!

I agree with you JeremyAlexander ...... up to a point. Discounting your somewhat tactless way of saying it that is. I too think xp in all its "flavors" is .... over the hill so to speak and ought to be canned. On the other hand I can see legit reasons why some still have it. Monetary mostly I think, but even that excuse is getting harder to swallow with Win7 HP going for between $69-$119 these days. On the other hand both my Mother and Stepmother (both 73 years old) are seemingly TERRIFIED of anything but xp. They both, despite much fruitless persuasion haha, insist that they could never "learn" how to use Win7. "Its pretty" but its not what they know. My Mother will not even TOUCH my Win7 laptop for fear of "messing up" my "beautiful" computer.

And nitroman84 .... hahaha actually I HAVE thought the same thing! I really don't think I'll be getting Windows 8, especially if what I've been hearing about it is true. I am probably the only person in the universe who really dislikes touch screens and from what I understand that is the main difference between 7 and 8 (touchscreen capability/optimization). And I really don't care for the few screen shots I've seen of the GUI of 8. Maybe 9 will be my next one.........

I'm very humbled by that, but the facts are that xp is already in it's extended support cycle and will fade away in 2014; and I guess some people do keep toyotas that long, but my point is that shouldn't hold up all auto manufacturers everywhere from producing newer cars.

Agreed, I think I may be skipping 8 myself. I have yet to see any improvements over 7 that would do me any good. On the other hand I'm a very impulsive person, so I guess only time will tell.

Your comment reminds me. The beginning of 2009 there was an Ice storm that devastated the Northwest Arkansas area and the engineering firm I work for was called out to access the damage on a large Cooperative's system. One day I looked over at a computer a secretary was using at this office and noticed it was running Windows 2000. I would assume they are still using that computer now and will until it dies.
