I see what you mean kado. I never used Vista but I heard from friends that it was terrible. I skipped it and went straight to W7.
Anyway, back on topic. What's so bad about FF4 anyway?

Yes the company I worked for wouldn't touch it. I don't know if they have gone for 7 yet as I retired a few years ago.

There is nothing inherently wrong with FF. browsers are a matter of user preference. My order of preference at the moment is

1. Chrome.
2. Firefox.
3 IE9 (a very poor third).

But as I said that's just mine. I have no problem with others choices.

1. Firefox
2. Chrome
999. IE9

Somewhere in between comes all of the other browsers. Anyway, many people on this thread are apparently going to switch from FF to Chrome if Mozilla forces the new update to FF4. For some reason, everyone is of the opinion that v3.5 is better than v4.0 :/

I never used FF 3.5. I started with 3.6 and the interface in FF4 is more like Chrome than 3.6 so if it is an interface problem I don't see how going to Chrome is a solution to that and the update policy on Chrome is automatic and it's difficult to change that.

That's exactly the thing I'm confused about. Anyway, only time will tell whether Mozilla will actually force the update.

and you would see a 10 fold increase in post asking to to disable the forced updates. i agree people should keep there software up to date especially browsers, but it is wrong to force people to do so. it is there computer not the software makers computer.

As far as FF GUI that is the choice of the developers and if you don't like it there are lots of other browsers available (also free). If you want to change FF do your own version as it is Open Source and you can do what you want with it. Google the web and you will find other versions of FF like Blue Moon and others that may suit you.

For now. But what if they decide to force from 3.5-3.6 to 4.0+? It's the beginning of a slippery slope.
That is the problem. You are assuming FF if FORCING an upgrade. That is not the case. If you have FF set for auto update then it will auto install the newer version. But you still have a choice. Check your FF options and take control of the update process. Its still under your control and you can stay on whatever version you want, just don't expect any support going forward for older versions.

Not sure why folks are concerned about Chrome auto-updating. I find their updates nearly transparent.

Some people don't like programs making changes to their system that they don't know about and can't easily stop. It is the same reason a lot of people don't apply windows updates automatically. It is about having control over your machine.
