I really don't understand. Why are so many people against trying to stop people from stealing using the internet. Banks use all kinds of methods to try and stop people from stealing and no body gets upset. We lock are cars and houses to try and stop stealing from us and nobody gets upset. Why is it so upsetting when a producer of music or movies tries to lock the door so people can't steal from them? You do not have the right to steal just because you use the internet instead of a crow bar or a gun. If you have paid for a movie that does not give you a right to pass it around the world without the legal owner permission. I have many store bought movies and I do loan they out like I do books. Only one person has it at one time. Most of the time I get them back. It's also illegal to buy a book and make copies and pass them out all over the world without getting permission from the legal owner. Who's complaining about those laws other than China?

    Hi all
This has just abot run its course -- you basically have 2 sets of incompatable people - Those who will acquire anything they want via torrents and those who don't.

There is NO way technically to prevent people from "file sharing" as methods from simple "Snail Mail" to anonymous proxies, dynamic / hidden IP addresses (and a bit of other technology) can always be used which will thwart even the most aggressive searchers.

Let the Lawyers do their own thing and you do yours -- It would be far far better if a lot of content was LEGALLY available as well -- such as really ending the stupid regionalisation / region codes on DVD's (easily fixable), Movies shown in different countries with totally long periods between the release dates and options to play content on whatever medium I choose.

I trave a lot --it's much easier to store movies on a small external HDD than carry around a load of DVD's -- why should I be penalized for duplicating a DVD I'VE PAID FOR on to a HDD --and why should I only be allowed to play it in a specific region.

Until things like this are fixed I sympathize with the "Torrenters" even though I don't really condone their use except for legal applications likeNew Linux release distributions etc.

    Cheers

first of all it's 100% legal for you to put your movie on your computer or any HDD. (in the united states it is anyway) some blue ray discs now come with a digital copy for just this reason.

there is a thing called net neutrality. which guarantee's everyone has the same speeds accessing the internet (not talking about your download speed). but there are several large corporations (isp's and telephone companies) that want full control over net neutrality to basically do away with it.
with the dispersal of Net Neutrality (the same companies that are named in this story) have a more sinister way of controlling your activities.
basically they intend to choke down any site or content from their competitors. unless they pay them a fee to have higher uploading capabilities. And I'm sure they've figured out how to slow down your torrent activities. which is why they've lobbied so hard and spend millions to get control of the internet. and they're winning. The FCC has already caved to a lot of their requests.
    Hi there

For putting Movies on to a Disc usually means disabling the CSS encryption -- technically illegal - but there again if I've PAID for the DVD I should be able to play it anywhere so the DVD producers should in theory give you a key to be able to copy the Disc -- but of course this would defeat the whole point of CSS so the whole B/S goes round again.

Also does anybody even think that regionally coding DVD's these days has the slightest bit of use either. In making my HDD copy I remove the DVD regional coding -- I don't know what computer I might be using when I want to play the disc. Again this is technically illegal -- so when we still have THESE trivial pieces of law around who is going to give any support whatsoever for tighter legislation -- which in 99.99% of cases is absurdingly easy to get round --anybody with even a modicum of computer skills can thwart even the most sophisticated search attempts.

I don't condone overt piracy but get the BASIC stuff sorted first and then you'll get a lot more sympathy.

I doubt even the most scummy greedy lawyer would have a hard time preventing you from lending say a Brother a DVD.

Well in my book if the Brother was far away say in Johannesburg while I was in N.Y what's the difference of lending him the DVD - but sending it as an ISO via email.

    Cheers

I'm glad to see a crackdown on copyright infringement and the like. Hopefully this will cover stuff like operating systems and other software, rather than just music and videos. A torrent found OS is just asking for trouble.
    Agree 100% with you LiquidSnak.
Let me see if I get this correct. Some people are upset because it's going to be more difficult to take things from others without paying for it or getting their permission. To me stealing from a large company is no different than stealing from you neighbor.
Charging over $250,000 for 12 songs based on "damages"?
If a person doesn't steal they don't have to worry about the fine.

Won't this work jimbo45. Send you brother your legal copy of the DVD and or book. You could also buy his own DVD and or book and send it to him. Surely a loved one is worth that extra effort. This would eliminate your brother being part of illegal conspiracy. Sending a ISO makes the problem. One paid for copy and one that isn't paid for.

    Hi all

I don't think it is that simple -- Often I NEVER use the DVD's any more since storing the whole library on a 2TB external HDD is much more portable --especially when I'm also travelling.

Also a lot of computers don't even HAVE DVD players / writer anymore.

It's presumably up to the Borrower not to pass it on or put it on torrents.

So I can't agree with "Send the original DVD".

There are many countries who were able to create entire businesses based around bootlegged material, and none of what's proposed can/will deal with that.
In other words, I'm a crook ... but those other guys are bigger crooks. So go prosecute them first and leave me alone. Right?

The big industries think there's no limit to what they can earn. So if they don't do so, they blame the internet user because they don't make enough profit.
Yet people still line-up for releases of REAL good products. Call o Duty for instance. People buy it, because they want to own it because they like it and they think the product is good.
Flightsimulator was the same sort of quality product for the milions of fans and they used to stand in line to be the first to heave the new version.
These big companies shouldn't look to the people who sometimes download their products illegal, but they should do something about the quality of what they bring, or bring it more cheaply so more people will be tempted to buy -still if it's good enuogh - that is the basic problem, most things just ain't good enough to buy.

Is this what 2012 is all about?

Jokes aside, I doubt this will fly for very long. People will protest, rebel, etc with the way society is attached to tech at this point.

Computers without DVD writers? You mean netbooks and tablets? Every PC I see day to day has at least a DVD drive in it...
