Bartz is out: will Ballmer come after Yahoo again?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2011

When Carol Bartz took the helm at Yahoo! in 2009, she promised a "back to the basics" approach. Three years later, the company is truly back to square one—as in looking for a new leader once again.

Bartz came in on the heels of Jerry Yang beating back an unwelcome merger proposal from Microsoft. She ended up signing a search partnership with Microsoft's Bing, but never seemed keen on selling the company outright.

So with Bartz out of the way, would Steve Ballmer be interested in making another pass at Yahoo?

I think Yahoo is beyond saving as it is now. The best thing they have is Alta Vista search engine which they bought the rights to and it is a GREAT product. The main page is clean and uncluttered, and the search results are actually better than those of Google. Ever since Google search placed that darn black bar of distraction on the search page I have hated it. It actually draws your eyes away from the search box, Alta Vista is perfect.

Alta Vista has been around since about 1995 it was a major player back in the 90s and early 00s.
Not sure why it had problems.

    Hi all
Yahoo as a search engine -- forget it

BUT Yahoo finance is still the greatest FREE site for all stock market stuff.

While this might only be of academic interest to a lot of people on the W7 site YAHOO is still a great source of data for example EOD (End of day) stock data, real time quotes and OPTIONS.

I'm sure I'm not the only person on this site who has done some market trading

For example I like OPTIONS trading say looking for a PUT on PCX expiring this Friday. Pic enclosed.

I'm not even going to attempt to start teaching people on this site on how to do Options trading but suffice to say YAHOO is one of the best FREE sources of financial imformation available ANYWHERE.

Don't forget also that they have a great facility for downloading Stock prices in any way you want via a decent API into an EXCEL spreadsheet too. Nobody else even comes close.

As a competitor to Google I agree its days are numbered but there's lots of life left in "The Old Dog" yet.

    Cheers
