As to the debate between the relevant differences between Windows and Linux, allow me to add my feelings.....
I have never used Linux and know little about it. I have seen Mandrake, Red Hat and other forms of Linux. How do they differ?
Mandrake, or Mandriva as they call it now, is set up to use APT. Also I think it's aimed more at programmers than Red Hat. Red Hat rpm tool, their package manager, I used to have to fiddle with installs. Different rpms from different sources had different ideas of the expected directory structure.

Most everything I installed with APT on Mandrake, if it didn't work after running the automated install and config, it was usually a matter of setting one environment variable. The directory structure was more standardized. Didn't take 2 days to get a new program to work for the vast majority of stuff I downloaded.

Basically Mandriva, at least as of v. 10 that I tried, is Ubuntu only much better. If you have broadband over an ethernet card the One CD install is seemless. It boots with your broadband working. Anything that didn't fit on the CD is in the package tool. It downloads and installs what you select. Basically after you select your packages and choose a root password and window manager, the system boots to X with all your apps installed and working. Tons of free programming languages are in the package tool menu on the boot CD. If you want to learn to program on the cheap and don't mind a bit of extra work, Linux sure ponies up the free development software!

I started out using Slackware distros. The reward for all that frustration was later on when I used the desktop applets to configure something, and they didn't work, after a bit of searching I could usually remember how to fix the script under /etc directory that really did the work. :)

    Hi all
Those analyst firms predictions aren't worth the paper they are written on ---

GARTNERS one of the worst --they generally get only 50% right (or wrong) depending on your point of view. -about the same as Random Guessing or determining the outcome on tossing a coin would get you.

    IDP same as Gartners.

Look at STANDARD AND POORS (Credit rating) who everybody seems to regard with "God like" reverence -- they got the WHOLE Banking and financial sector wrong --remember the "Packaged debts" and "Sub Prime Slime" they thought was so great and "Gold Plated security."

Those type of agencies / "think tanks" just consist of a load of overpaid nobodies just sprouting daily doses of total Bovine Scatology.

I like W8 and think the Metro idea will be more popular than its detractors say but it WILL need a bit of a re-jig to be suitable for a workstation apps in the arrangement and customisation of the Metro Tiles.

Further as people are discovering (hope the "I told you so" syndrome isn't back at work here) tablets have serious drawbacks when you need a PC s well for serious work such as preparing presentations / spreadsheets etc. A decent Netbook isn't that much bigger / heavier than a tablet --you can get an internal 2.5 inch 1TB disc, dual core processor and 4GB memory even in a modest netbook.

As for touch screens -- do you want a 9 year old kid smearing greasy fingers all over 4 your nice 42 inch or bigger top of the range backlit monitor.

    Cheers

I think this is key. It's the difference between casual and serious computer use.

If I want to be as casual as a tablet I would use a Smart Phone, so to me a tablet is an oversize phone which can't make calls on the fly.

I found an item on a blogsite that raised some objections to Windows 8. Two of them were: you wil nly be able to purchase apps for their new desktop by buying them directly from the Windows Store (Apple does the same thing with their own store), and they will be able to remotely shut down any app you buy from them.

If MS actually goes through with this, they might find Windows 7 harder to kill off than they expected.

    Again...

    Tablet: Maybe

    Desktop: No farking way.

As an option sure, but not allowing local install of downloaded apps outside the MS software store? Never ever going to happen on desktop Windows. (Unless MS really WANTS to remove 80% of their customer base from their bottom line over night)

    Hi there
I'm not really a fan of zillions of apps -- We've now got to the redicuous stage where whatever you do someone will say "There's an App for that" and everybody spends the whole day walking around staring into Mobile Phones as if they were Metal detectors leading them to pots of buried treasure.

Why on earth should I have the SLIGHTEST bit of interest in what the weather is in New Guinea or news of the latest state of traffic on London's M25 ring motorway. If I DID NEED that information I'd probably already have got it either from work or by some other method in any case.

However a WORKSTATION with some seriously sensible stuff like Ms Office, CAD, statistical analysis etc. decent multi-media, DB acesses and queries, Server stuff (i.e "Classical programs and products) certainly will continue to be needed and can't be delivered like an App from the app store at apple.

If you want a typical example of how HORRIBLE the whole app idea has become just try using that abomination Google have come out with - their app store - android apps -- IMO should be called SIMIAN APPS -- assumng you can even get on to it --if you travel and your phone is connected to a different Network say Proximus in Belgium when your home network is Siminn (IS) you get "Phone not registered" . When you DO eventually get on 99% of the stuff is utter junk and garbage -- probably potentially full of viruses with NO QC whatsoever.

I'm sure MS will ensure the QC is better but most of this stuff is really quite useless for proper computing. I'm sure also it's a nine days wonder -- people will soon tire of it -- and finally the whole Facebook phenomonen is beginning to wane -- people are beginning to start TALKING to each other again ------and with Facebook going Mainstram and corporate is not what most of the younger users want anyway.

So W8 on a desktop with Metro will be fine. Ms App store -- waste of time.

And to all you Touch screen devotees -- try formulating a complex SQL query to run on a REMOTE work DB using touch screen entry only -- and I mean a COMPLEX query.

    Cheers
