    It's perfectly cleared that only people that had been invited to test Windows 7 would get the free Ultimate license. Those people are the people who had been invited to test Windows Vista and Windows XP...these people are the real official testers.

    So in other words, about 90% Windows 7 testers or almost all unofficial Windows testers will NOT get any free gift copy.

    What that means if you simply came along and signed at Technet to test the 7 betas before they were out you still lose out since you didn't receive the invite to start with. I had to ask an MVP back in Dec. '08 where you went to sign up for 7 since I was late only seeing the RCs for Vista.
