You mentioned, why would a company spend millions to dumb down people. The answer is in your face, they spend millions to do it because they have the money to do it, and it's a goal that they must achieve because your software is in most of the worlds computers and people use your software (OS) on a daily basis. You can make people dumb without actually telling them they're dumb. Microsoft is huge company they don't work for your best interest like Google they work for the Governments best Interest.

In North America alone excluding Mexico there 350 million people, there is no way in your most wonderful dreams that the government cares for all of us. Whatever your society security number says who you are, you are. Not your name.

Now that is a theory you really have to explain. How does Google work for our interest and MS for the goverment?

I say screw the cloud. I want my stuff on my devices.

Absolutely. For my data the cloud is no solution and I don't think the cloud will get much use from desktops.

But for running some heavy hitter applications from a phone or a tablet, it may be ok.
