I attended the event in Cleveland, OH on October 12th. Turned in my 32-bit W7 Ultimate for a 64-bit version that they said we would get within 4-6 weeks. Two weeks later they emailed me and informed me I had been given a 1 year subscription to TechNet! I downloaded W7 64-bit and can't wait for Office 2010 to come out....
    Wow1

If I had known this, I would have given up 1 of the 2 copies my wife and I got, let her go ahead and use the 32-bit one, and I would have waited for the TechNet subsription!

    Sniff, sniff......

I signed up for the event they had in Santa Clara, CA at the beginning of last month. I work about 2 miles from the AMC theater where the event was held and showed up to register when the doors opened. They registered me but then told me I had to come back in the afternoon and couldn't attend the morning session. I got a bag with some junk software in it (which I ended up discarding) and a ticket for my free copy of Win 7. I left and went back to work but came back at my lunch to see if I could pick up my copy of Win 7. I was told I would have to attend the session from 1:00pm to 5:00pm and at the end of the session I would be given my copy. I had no intention of sitting in their presentation for 4 hours so I left. Never got my free copy and didn't get a t-shirt either. I thought it was pretty poorly handled event and a waste of my time.
You invested little and got nothing in return. If you had returned at 5pm, you could have traded your piece of paper for a $320 DVD. It was not necessary to attend the sessions - it was only necessary to be in the right place at the right time.
All I can say is........... WOW... oh WOW..........

He only lives 2 miles away and he couldn't come back at the end to get the FREE $320 DVD........ sigh.......... well, his loss somebody else's gain!

Last part is obvious. But they told you exactly how it worked, which matches what everyone who's gone to one of these things has reported here. Sounds to me like it was handled well enough. Not sure why you didn't get a t-shirt, though. Did you check the bag before you tossed it?

Given you essentially didn't follow their instructions and didn't actually attend, I'm not quite sure how you can say it was "poorly handled" and a "waste of your time."

On their end, they have more concerns beyond whether you get your free T-shirt and $300+ software. Those are actually just supposed to be side perks for the main event -- they're not the be-all end-all of the day from MS's standpoint.

Sounds like you're sort of rationalizing for your own purposes/ego. But yes, it sounds like you yourself wasted your own time. Their presentations were actually helpful, too.

Did you really expect that you could simply walk in, sign up and take a copy of the software and leave?

Personally my event was just fine. I picked up a few nice tidbits during the presentation and of course got the free copy of the software.

You would have had no problem whatsoever simply showing up after the afternoon sessions and jumping in the line to get the software. All I did was hand them my coupon, they took my survey form (which was in that bag) and that was it.

I enjoyed my event except I think that they could have done a better job at the quality of the onscreen projection. The ambient light was too high and the resolution of the screen wasn't good. I had a hard time deciphering what was on the screen and I have 20/20 vision.

Also, I didn't think the presenters were top notch. The one I had was okay but he was using his personal laptop for presentations and had a bunch of junk on the computer and seemed lost looking for his files for demo.

Also, my event was in Houston.

The San Diego event was well handled and very informative. I took pics, but due to low lighting many didnt come out well. I will post some later!

This was my 3rd Launch event... Win98, WinXP, and now Win7! I knew what to expect before I left. Stay for half a day, have a chance to win several cool prizes, and walk away with a free O.S. and other cool stuff at the end. Our Win7 presenter, Chris Davis, did an outstanding job and was both entertaining and informative.

Wake up strollin! If M.S. had handed out a free copy at the beginning, you would have left and so would 70% of the rest of attendees. This was their event not yours... you had to play by MS rules, or pay for your OS in another way! My biggest regret was not winning the XBOX360!

As did pretty much everybody else. When people officially complained, some were told, "he happy you got anything for free".

I wish I would have known beforehand about being forced to sit thru a 4 hour presentation in order to receive some "free" software. I thought there would be vendor exhibits and such, along with demos of the software which I would have been interested in. What could MS possibly talk about for 4 hours? I have better use for my time.

BTW, The original Godfather movie did suck due to that crap actor, Marlon Brando. That sob ruined that movie and Apocalypse Now with his mumbling!
