It's bland looking because the entire Metro UI is simple and elegant. I think Metro looks great and I'm sure using the right colour with the Windows logo, the new Windows logo will look great.
As long as it's confined to the Metro skin and we have a desktop alternative, I don't really care, and I suspect the same goes for everyone else who also doesn't how Metro looks. If they replaced the desktop concept entirely for Metro though, we'd have a problem...

This logo looks sterile ....does anyone remember the stunt that "The Gap" pulled last year, where they unveiled a horrid looking new logo and immediately pulled it because the original logo is part of their identity?

I think this version is HORRID! I mean really bad.

I agree if anything MS should let the customers have input. In reality Windows has become a sort of national icon in the USA.

I personally like the Sponge Bob version someone posted, but excepting that the current version is immediately recognizable to everyone. The new crappy version looks like MS is trying to be crApple.

One thing I do agree with is that MS needs to look back to the more "friendly" feeling they had in the beginning and perhaps that is why they are looking at this old style logo...But it just is too cold and sterile .

MS would do themselves a BIG favor if they started to be more approachable like they were when they first started.
