^ that's already just about happened here. there are next to no computer parts shops in area anywhere. The big chains like CompUSA are gone. Obviously Circuit City is gone. Best Buy is carrying less and less. The mom & pop small shops are all gone. There used to be a time when over a weekend I'd decide to change something and would pick up some parts at the local computer store, but those days are gone. Now I have to order everything and wait for it. I miss the days of instant gratification sometimes.
And it's not just electronics. There are so many items, that I can't even find in my state. There's usually someone else that sells the item, out of state. So even if one tries to support the local economy, you have to go online just to get the things you need.

Yeah, I hate Walmart. It's an absolute last resort for me to step for in there.

I find much of what I need at MicroCenter, out by the Oakland Mall (here in SE Michigan). It's quite a drive from where I'm at but I do like to get the mobo and CPU locally just in case there's a problem. Other items, like the graphics card I want, I usually need to go online, although they had the HD5850 I was after for this latest build.

The real problem is that at this rate, we won't have anywhere to go to actually look at stuff left. We'll just have to order online and hope the picture/specs does it justice.
I have been just buying online for several years. It works great for me. I do use the local store to return clothes that don't fit correctly. I would miss the store for the returns, but I could get along without it.

I order electronics online without too much worry because it's something I know a lot about.
    Not everyone is that way.

I too this day have been unable to explain to my friend's mom the difference between a browser and a operating system...
...not has he for that matter.

I buy lots of stuff online too and am comfortable doing so. But sometimes I just want something and I want it today...and I'm willing to pay a bit extra for it. Unfortunately, as stores go away, this becomes an unavailable option.

That's what microcenter is for though. Their prices are better their staff is more knowledgeable and the selection though crammed into a generally smaller space is better. Personally I would love to see microcenter about double its number of stores. Then I could live without most these other places... hell I could even do without fry's since their return policies cause me to tear my shirts and turn green.

And for those of you with a microcenter nearby, that's an option. Michigan has exactly 1 store, and it's in Madison Heights. For some people in the state, that's a 4 hour drive. We used to have dozens of small computer shops in my area where you could get some RAM, hard drives, motherboards, cables, etc. Unfortunately these are all gone now.

Yeah, you still see mom and pop from the mom and pop stores.
They are bagging your groceries at walmart, or taking your 2am order at the 24 hour drive thru.
    why?
...because we push forward and refuse to evolve.

...sorry that may have been a little too real, now I'm feeling depressed.

Same here. That said, however, I don't like medium and even small stores going out of business in favor of large corporations which then gain a virtual monopoly, albeit MicroCenter could well be a dinosaur because of those things spoken of in this thread; a good reason for MC not to double its store number.

It's interesting that in the same block that the one MicroCenter in Michigan is on there is a small computer store. I suspect it continues to exist through service to a small clientele they've built perhaps for custom builds.
