Windows 7 90 day Trial & Volume License Availability

    Posted: 01 Sep 2009
Last month we made Windows 7 available to customers with Software Assurance and to MSDN and TechNet Subscribers. Today I am happy to announce two more ways for businesses to get Windows 7 for their deployment and evaluation.

Volume License Availability, at a Discount
Starting today, businesses can order upgrades to Windows 7 from a Microsoft Volume License Reseller. This option is for businesses that don’t already have Windows Software Assurance and want to upgrade their existing business PCs to Windows 7. There are two editions of Windows 7 available through Volume Licensing:

    • Windows 7 Professional: Designed for small and midsize organizations, Windows 7 Professional provides a PC experience you can count on, helps you get more done, and helps safeguard your work. Today, we are also starting a 15% discount on Windows 7 Professional upgrade licenses that will run until February 28, 2010. Contact your Microsoft reseller to take advantage of this offer and confirm availability in your area (discount is offered on Microsoft pricing to its channel partners; pricing offered by partners may vary).
    • Windows 7 Enterprise: If you have an active Software Assurance agreement or purchase one with your Windows 7 Professional upgrade licenses or new PCs with Windows 7 Professional, you can deploy Windows 7 Enterprise. Designed for enterprises and businesses that want to optimize their desktop IT infrastructure, Windows 7 Enterprise will help make users productive anywhere, enhance security and control, and streamline PC management.
Windows 7 will run on most PCs businesses have today. More information on tools to help with your upgrade to Windows 7 is available at www.windows.com/business/upgrade. Additionally, we recommend that customers with Software Assurance purchase the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP) to aid in their enterprise OS management. The MDOP subscription currently includes six technologies that help reduce the TCO of a Windows 7 desktop. MDOP simplifies application deployment and lifecycle management and provides a solution for resolving application incompatibility through virtualization. MDOP also increases IT responsiveness and user uptime through robust diagnostics and monitoring capabilities, and increases IT control by providing asset tracking and group policy change management.

Keep in mind that Windows Volume Licensing upgrades are only available for PCs that already have a qualifying Operating System, such as Windows Vista Business or Windows XP Professional. For a list of qualified versions of Windows 7 operating system licenses, download the Windows 7 and Optimized Desktop Volume Licensing Guide available on http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ent...ow-to-buy.aspx.

    Windows 7 Enterprise 90-Day Trial
If you are an IT Pro who does not have a Software Assurance Volume Licensing agreement and are not an MSDN/TechNet subscriber, you can download the Windows 7 Enterprise 90-Day Trial. This is something many of you have asked for as a means to continue evaluating Windows 7 in your environment prior to deployment, and I am pleased to announce that you can download it starting today from the from the Springboard Series site on TechNet. Read all the details about this trial edition in Stephen Rose’s post.

Businesses now have access to multiple resources they can use to plan their deployment or begin upgrading their PCs to Windows 7. Beginning October 22, 2009 all customers will be able to purchase new PCs with Windows 7.

Thank you for the heads up. I could ask the corresponding support forum, but I will stab at it here:

I want to sit on (delay) the install for a couple of months. Considering the 10 day activation requirement, do you think I would be able to wait until December to install/activate this for the first time?

Antman, not sure on that specific question. I downloaded it earlier today and at the moment working from the Enterprise Edition. I read everything there was posted about the evaluation, albeit didn't find anything that indicated whether or not you could. I was thinking the same as you, but decided to just go ahead and load it up. Thus far it appears to be more stable than the RTM or RC. If anything comes up I let you know. :)

Just for the record, this ISO file has different hashes and size from the available on the Technet and MSDN subscribers:

    I downloaded the x86 version:

    7600.16385.090713-1255_x86fre_enterprise_en-us_EVAL_Eval_Enterprise-GRMCENEVAL_EN_DVD.iso
    2,23 GB
    CRC32: E884394B
    SHA-1: 971FC00183A52C152FE924A6B99FDEC011A871C2

    From my Technet acount:
    en_windows_7_enterprise_x86_dvd_x15-70745.iso
    2,28 GB
    CRC: 6A9B5097
    SHA1: C6B905E48FDB6CB5BFCA967715A64461B812D40C

I think yes, based on this:
    TechNet Evaluation Center said:
The download will be available through March 31, 2010, while supplies last.
I think you could activate it until late spring.

EDIT: Do you think I could upgrade my Ultimate RC build 7100 with this? If not, I'm waiting my boxed Ultimate to arrive, I have too much software and applications to reinstall, but I would definitely try the final version already now if upgrade installation is possible.

    Kari, Antman,

You will not be able to set on a downloaded copy; reason being is there is a time limit built into the ISO. Basically it appears that Microsoft took this into consideration prior to offering the evaluation copy. Think the reason is because they were able to for see just that happening (someone downloads 10 copies to use and does a clean install every ninety days = 900 days). Also there is a limited amount of copies that Microsoft will allow to be downloaded, hence, once they reach a certain number of downloads, the download center for the evaluation copy will be turned off.

If I get any more information I will post it here on this thread.

Thanks for info. How about this upgrade issue? I mean, I'm not willing to spend a day or two now reinstalling all my software, that must wait until end of October. But if I am able to use this trial version to upgrade my Ultimate RC to Enterprise RTM, I'm very interested to do that now.

Here is some information I got from Technet (Springboard), hope this helps those who have more questions.

What you need to know before you begin.

Before you get started with installation, we want to share some important points about this release:

    -
If you’ve installed the Windows 7 Beta or Windows 7 Release Candidate on your PC, you’ll need to back up your data and perform a clean installation of the 90-day Trial.
    -
The 90-day Trial is the full working version of the Windows 7 Enterprise, the version most of you will be working with in your corporate environment.
    -
The 90-day Trial will not require a product key (it is embedded with the download), but the product will time out after 90 days of activation.
    -
You have 10 days to activate the product. If not activated within 10 days, the system will shut down once every hour until activated.
    -
The 90-day Trial will shut down once every hour when you have reached the end of the 90-day evaluation period.
    -
The 90-day Trial is offered for a limited time and in limited quantity. The download will be available through March 31, 2010, while supplies last.
    -
After the 90-day Trial expires, if you wish to continue to use Windows 7 Enterprise, please note that you will be required to purchase and perform a clean installation of Windows 7, including drivers and applications. Please keep this in mind; Windows 7 Enterprise is not available through retail channels.

Once I’ve evaluated, how do I get my version of Windows 7 Enterprise?

Windows 7 Enterprise is only available through the Microsoft® Volume Licensing program. To learn about the Volume Licensing and Software Assurance benefits, please visit the Volume Licensing information page. For more information about the Windows 7 Enterprise and the benefits for your organization, please visit the Windows Enterprise website.

Where do I go to get support?

The first place to go for information and guidance is the Springboard Series on TechNet. Here you will find the right information, at the right technical level, for the right point in your adoption process. In addition to technical information about Windows 7, you’ll find tools and resources to assess the readiness of your environment, address application and hardware compatibility issues, configure a deployment image, plan out your pilot and deployment projects, and troubleshoot issues. You’ll also find community resources and topical discussions.

Since the release of Window 7 Beta in January, we have a very vibrant Windows 7 forum, with more than 100,000 posts and answer rates greater than 90 percent. This is the place to search for solutions to more obscure challenges you might face due to unique circumstances in your environment.

And if you want to hear more from other organizations looking to move to a modern operating system, and from the engineering team behind Windows 7, please visit www.talkingaboutwindows.com and join in on the conversation!

Thanks again for your investment in Windows 7.

    The Springboard Series Team
