Windows 7 Boots In 11 Seconds

Ok, I timed my work machine running Win7 64-bit this morning.

It's an Intel Core 2 Duo E8400, on an Asus P5QL-Pro board, 4GB Corsair XMS2 ram, with a 500GB Western Digital Caviar BLUE hard drive. The box is set up as a triple boot of WinXP 32-bit, Win7 64-bit and Ubuntu 9.04 32-bit.

From the time I hit the power button, it takes my box about 23 seconds to get through the POST to my grub bootloader. Once I select Windows from Grub, it takes 3 more seconds to get to my Windows bootloader.

From the point that I click on Windows 7, it takes 16 seconds to bring me to the logon prompt and at the 24 second mark, I have typed in my password and have a desktop with no spinning blue circle.

Running the RestartTime.vbs file shows the following on the same machine:


That's not bad at all considering that I have an IDE DVD Burner on the box, so it has to initialize the Marvell IDE controller and I have a stand-alone Intel 10/100/1000GT NIC which initializes as well during the POST. Then, I have my password which takes me about 2 seconds to type in and mash enter.

mine is only an amd athlon x2 dual core 6000 @ 3.0ghz with 4 gigs of 800mhz ddr2 and boots up including bios time in 27 seconds! Windows 7 PWNS!!

11 seconds ? pfffttt, I used have old computer called Commodore 64 is much quicker when you turn power on in the back of C-64.

Win 7 + Hot Rod PC = 11 sec

C-64 + Basic = 0.01 sec

Which one is faster ?

hahaha! go comodore 64!!!

I was beginning to think I was the only one left alive that even remembered the C-64.

That was my first home computer, back in (about) 1980.
Boot was done from the Kernel ROM chip and was indeed as fast as it took for the monitor to warm up to display the Basic (DOS) screen.

I really didn't like all the redundancy built into the Kernel, so I and a friend of mine RE-Wrote the kernel, taking out the tape routines and much of the file loading redundancy and I got it down to an acceptably fast machine. I burned my own custom kernel rom chips and sold them nation wide.

Even on my first PC, an IBM XT Clone, I fussed with the Bios rom to cut boot time.
I think I got that down to 5 sec's from power on to a DOS prompt on screen.
Ya gotta love those old PC's! Windows ruined the PC.

PS: I still have my modified C-64.
