No plans for Windows 7 SP2

    Last Updated: 24 Oct 2012 at 10:34
The Register is reporting an "exclusive":

Sources close to Microsoft's sustained engineering team, which builds and releases service packs, have told The Register there are no plans for a second Windows 7 SP – breaking precedent on the normal cycle of updating Windows.

Instead, Microsoft will keep updating Windows 7 using patches released each month until support for Windows 7 comes to an end. That date is currently slated for 24 months after the most current SP – that’s SP1, which was released in February 2011 – and would put end of life at February 2013.

Somehow that date doesn't look right...

"...pushing customers towards the completely new Windows 8." More like pushing customers away from Microsnot.

Seven is so good that it does not need a new service pack. It's a shame that Windows 8 beats 7 in performance benchmarks according to many review sites. Hope MS could provide an update that improves W7 performance.

Here's how SP affects the product support. When a SP is issued the previous version is only supported for 24 Months. Since W7 SP1 was issued in 2011, W7 without SP1 will not be supported after 4/9/2013. For now W7 SP1 will be supported until 2020 unless there is a SP2 and then SP1 will be supported for 24 Months after SP2 is released.

Microsoft will realise they will need to release a SP2 for Windows 7, when many Desktop users do not migrate to the Windows 8 operating system, and people start to forget to install individual updates released every month, and then complain to Microsoft about the performance and security issues found within their Windows 7 installation.

Win 7 will be like XP because business are using it and trust it. Win 7 will be around for a long time. I hate Win 8. Literally hate it. I have never felt that way about an operating system. I use Kubuntu most of the time now and I am no MicroSoft hater. I like a lot of things they are doing. Skydrive is great even though it's mostly a dropbox ripoff, and I like what they are doing with office online. I also really like the business feel to outlook.com, but Win 8 is terrible.
