I use Live messenger every day for long video calls.. it works fine.
I tried skype video call but i did not liked it much main problems I had with skype was
    1. In skype video quality of my 720p HD cam is far worse than in live messenger seems like old 480 camera.
    2. Generally skype uses more resources.
    3. I use hotmail and there is no mail notifier in skype.
    4. I find remote assistance function in messenger very usefull. (I use teamviewer, logmein but I think that in most cases to help my friends I use remote assitance because its simple and requires no additional install)

    • If anyone knows when skype replaces messenger will it have homtail mail notifier?
    • Will it include remote assistance invitation functionality like messenger?

How did you manage to keep it? Is it based upon browser version?
you can keep it by not switching to new version.. if you switched to the new version i think there is no way back... i don't know if ms will force the switch to the new version any time..

I was personally using it but, even though, I was connected, I was rarely chatting. But, the main reason why I used Messenger (2009) was because how useful it was regarding e-mail notifications. If I had a new e-mail coming in, a popup would appear and if I clicked it, it would open a new tab immediately in Firefox. If I missed that notification, there was the button in upper right corner showing a (1) so I would click on it and get to my new e-mail. That's the only thing I would miss it for.
i use trillian for the same reason, i have now updated to skype and the messenger icon on my pc no longer works, i have since discovered that i can add skype to trillian and as i was logged into messenger from trillian it still monitors my email so i get notifications on the desktop ,clicking them also opens my inbox in firefox and trillian shows the number of unread emails also.
the only thing i am missing is that whenever a contact signed into messenger i got a notification, which is now gone. and skype doesnt have notification pop ups either. so win win
i even get facebook notifications and can view a summarised version of my fb wall from trillian.
give it a whirl, i have 6 email accounts monitored from it. and i can chat through all my chat clients in one place.
this is beggining to sound like a sales pitch, maybe i should stop now!

these are the 3 points that I liked about WLM so much. Skype drains my memory and CPU since my machine is not the newest one out there. I remember I used to use WLM back in <2009, at that time there're much of my friends and colleagues use WLM and using WLM felt so much fun. furthermore, what I liked most about WLM is the custom emoticon feature they provide this is the feature which makes me and my friends enjoy using WLM so much.

but it's true that WLM becomes less popular within these years and now I almost never use it again well, I'm not sure with the moving to the Skype will make my friends active again, since Skype is not that amazing in features except for its video chat IMO. :)

If you regularly used it, you might miss it. Those that didn't use it generally found it an annoyance.
Never saw it, never even knew it existed.

    No loss.
