We also get a lot of FUD about how much faster 8 is on the desktop. 7 is just as fast if you set it to Windows 2000 classic desktop and reduce the graphics subsystem overhead. This may or may not show depending on your system. On my old Athlon 754 system in Classic desktop mode it is perfectly usable, add aero and it goes into a s l o w e r mode. The same is true on my little Eee PC, so IMHO strip our aero and claim it is faster than 7 is a sham. On lower end or older hardware this is going to show up but on the average enthusiast desktop not at all. Simply put if you want 7 to be quicker turn off the eye candy and set it to hibernate.

Hi there
try Windows to Go (W8) and Linux from the same USB (install Bootmanager after installing the Windows to Go system. Partition the USB drive into two partitions (DISKPART commands).
You'll need the Enterprise version of W8 but you can download for free for 90 days.
I know this is W7 but by using the W8 windows to go it should give you a fully usable bootable W8 system even if the machine has no internal HDD's -- then add the Linux system as a DUAL BOOT just like you can do with a normal windows system. The entire boot process is managed from the USB drive.
For W7 with a bit of fiddling around with GRUB and creating and mounting a VHD you should be able to have a bootable W7 system -- and GRUB will allow a standard bootable Linux system too. NOTE I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT A W7 VIRTUAL MACHINE. Booting and mounting a VHD isn't the same as running a VM from VM software such as VMware / Vbox / HYPER-V.
If you protect the "C" drive for the Windows system on the external USB disk and add extra partitions you should be able to keep your system decently "non persistent" but to create a totally "Live" Windows system might be a bit tricky. Once you've got a bootable working Windows system it should be possible to work out what to do next.
The Bartpe type of system worked fine for Windows XP but it wasn't actually a "Real" XP system in the proper sense of the word.

Yes, I have been using 8 in various iterations for a very long time.
Many of us have done so and do not like it.
Not just because the UI is not appropriate for what we do.
It is move backwards - a step back to the dark old days.
Dependent on a central server - watched and controlled,charges and subscriptions.
Some seem to encourage it. I don't know if they are actually "shills" or they just don't understand what is going on.

Sorry, wasn't very clear.
I am talking about the installers. I have the customised installation media for several windows versions and linux versions, and various winpe and linux repair iso's all on one usb stick.
I am able to run windows and Linux installs, and Windows repair installs and linux live cd sessions, and boot .iso .img files, etc from there also.
Trying to figure the best way to control the booting of all those things, and might look at making them efi bootable.
[ I know about 8 to go, it is not new - I was doing the same thing with 7 long before.]
