Starting with Android OS 4.0 you can create folders on the start screen which you can name. Therefore it becomes very easy to organize your start screen apps. The whole idea of an OS is to make improvements to enhance the user experience not destroy it like Microsoft did.
This is not as difficult as it may appear. I 'hide' apps of the same nature behind one icon which expands when I tap on it. I have e.g. 5 browsers on my Nexus 7 and they are all in 1 icon. When I tab on the icon, a small box opens up and shows them individually. The same I have done for TV programs, my different navigation programs, etc. That keeps the desktop down to a manageable amount of clutter.As an experiment if you have an Android smart phone -- download and install say 30 - 40 Free apps and try and use them. The whole experience now from being relatively simple becomes a complicated mess -- endless scrolling to find an app that you've forgotten the name of and no way to sort or rename them in any meaningful or convenient manner.

Doesn't seem possible to rename / sort out the start screen on Samsung Galaxy IIIs phone -- you can do a little bit of fiddling with the Widgets folder but not a lot with Apps.
At least I can't find it. Phone running Android 4.1.
Might be possible on an Android tablet -- but seems overtly complex on a smart phone and it's beyond me.

I have the same phone. You just press an empty spot on the home screen an it brings up a menu with one option to create a folder that you can name.

The Znet article is a good article. The thing that disappoints me most is these improvements could have easily been put into a Windows 7 interface which would have been useable for a desktop environment.
Unfortunately for me I have gotten to the point that whenever I now look at a "Metro" screen either on a desktop or a smartphone I now have a very negative feeling towards that "Metro" look since it reminds me as to how Microsoft abandoned me. Microsoft could have easily integrated the start menu into Windows 8 to give users a choice of which interface works better for them and some customers may have found over time that the "Metro" interface coukld be useful in some instances. The dual interface could have even encouraged some customers to switch over to a touch screen. But Microsoft with its arrogance decided on the "I know what's best for Microsoft" approach for Windows 8.
Ed Bott is a very respected IT journalist since many years. I read a lot of his articles (already years back) and he always displays a very factual, balanced opinion.
I don't think it is fair to try to classify him as pro or contra MS. He is positive about true good function and criticizes bummers. I think that's the way it should be.
I guess it depends on what your view is, and how you view the article. I think if you keep an open mind, than, yes, the article is very fair. He lists the pros and cons from user experience, gives a fair assessment of where Microsoft is going, and what they need to improve.
He's also speaking the truth, the future is mobile computing, and Microsoft did have the potential to be left behind.
What am I missing?
