So basically, they will kill the desktop... the only useful interface they've done in years in favor of a dual window mode (which only allows, duh! 2 windows at most at the same time... the rest need to be switchable) and a bunch of advertisement tiles...

Well gentleman, 2013 is known for being the water serpent year in chinesse calendar, which means great changes and downfalls, seems that MS will get the biggest fail in their corporate lives in august... but maybe before that, they will be overwhelmed by Ubuntu and their alliance with that country, trying to take some market for them... MS doesn't realize this could harm them, and badly...

When Windows 7 came out, was a hope for real imprvements on the OS... I don't know if it's just my impression, but looks to me like if the current MS CEO is working too hard to get Windows out of the game... understimating PC users and moving into a dumb spiral of bad desitions... it like cleaning the path for Apple and Linux in the future...

That would be really sad, Windows was present in me since Windows 3.11, games, work, applications, homeworks, social... I don't see apple or Linux deleting what make them nice... they got desktops, taksbars, control panels... they change UI's for other type of devices and that's OK... But MS... Oh god...

If they value MS, the current CEO (I don't know who the hell he is...) must be fired and replaced by someone with more vision and responsability...

    Just my oppinion though....

This will definitely not be a good year for Microsoft and Mr. Ballmer, their CEO.

    No Windows desktop mode!? No!

Summary: The early look at Blue have some Windows experts thinking that Microsoft is getting ready to dump Windows 8's desktop mode once and for all in favor of Metro. No!

...I've thought all along that one way Microsoft could save Windows 8 from its current market malaise if it would make its desktop mode the primary interface instead of Metro.
That isn't what Thurrott sees happening though. In fact, he sees the exact opposite.

Well you know I will have 7 forever! on here. As for Linux originally I only had live cds and eventually ran into an old reference on how to use the other OS for data recovery. Computer First Aid Using Linux highlighted how Knoppix Live cds(once upon a time small enough to fit on a cd-r that is now live dvd only) now Knoppix 6.2 live dvd could rescue files while booting live from cd. Ubuntu guides for this showed up some years later.

I have also been trying out the differing Linux flavors on data recovery sticks as well as on VMs. The problem I kept running into however was trying to get Linux Mint Cinnamon or the other two they have for LM 13 while Linux Mint Debian the one time release with 200 preloaded app install options will immediately custom install to flash as well as VM. Zorin 6.0 on VM as well being the ubuntu LTS flavor seen there. The LMDebian however is a little on the larger size while not much larger then LM13.

Well that covers the Other OS side of the equation at least whlie I am not exactly looking forward to replacing the Windows OS entirely at least for the foreseeable future years to come until 2020. Yet you notice Steam got into Linux and others are soon to follow if MS keeps on with this latest trend which will pressure people into looking for alternatives. So the new mobile markket gain stratedgy while trashing the desktop will eventually backfire in MS's own face!

With Microsoft ditching the desktop mode in their upcoming Windows releases, I would never get another OS from them again. Microsoft is really doing a perfect job of making their customers move to the other side.

Well if M$ wants to phase out the desktop, I hope enough consumers decide to phase out Microsoft. They've totally gone off the deep end.

The real problem won't simply be changing OSs but what to do with all those softwares that still can't be run on Wine while you might get away running an older version on Boch's which detects supports hardwares not simply sharing resources from the host OS. You can run any version there and play games as well since it isn't limited to the 128mb or now 256mb AGP type confinement VirtualBox and VM Player have been content with.

The newer Linux releases in the forever growing number of flavors it seems are more user friendly with the intent of drawing more Windows as well as Mac users into the mix of Linux users. MS has now decided to see the main stream Windows users look sideways for something else unless they decide to get back ontrack of supporting the desktop platform in a progressive manner like 7 was bringing in!

It's definitely looking that way. Makes me wonder, if Apple is watching this? If Apple was smart, they'd lower their prices a little and offer an olive branch to the desktop crowd. Apple could clean up and leave Microsoft gasping for air.
Don't know if they will or not, but they could!

I know this much for sure, if M$ does indeed kill the desktop, the ONLY "Gesture" I'll have for Microsoft would not be recognized on a touch screen.
I'll run W7 till I can't run it any longer, then I'll look elsewhere.

The Fruit company has been an overcharger for decades already on everything. They can simply sit back and watch as MS goes into a self detruct mode as far as their main desktop products are concerned when enough people drop what they will be coming out with after 8 unless MS gets back in the ballpark again.

If they continue to follow the mobile/Tablet trend that will leave a large vacancy open for another company including Mr. Fruit Company to jump in where MS left off and take over! With Googlitis now into the OS business they might take an opt to come up with something that will run Windows apps including a new form of Android or I Robot! "we now can offer you the new Silver, Gold, or Platinum editions of "R2D2" version #1 desktop!"
