    Ed is very pro MS.

That is ok. He is entitled to be - he is expressing an editorial opinion.

His own blog is much the same. That is ok. He is allowed to have an editorial bias - newspapers do it of course.

Read it and see if you can pick up the clues.

I might add - this particular article is more subtle than others from him.

Where in this "future of mobile computing" do you fit the great mass of productive work which drives the world economy (and even SevenForums) currently done on the desktop?

Do you envision turning your Windows Phone sideways to do the company spreadsheet, or will you save a dinosaur monitor and keyboard to plug into it?

    Just askin.

MS have shot themselves in the foot.

    Some serious misjudgemenets.

They might well have hastened their decline.

They may be able to recover - they have the resources to keep going.

But they can't afford to keep getting it wrong.

    It is fascinating to watch.

It is tough for them - but it is their own doing.

It may benefit the consumer in the long run. It might allow other entrants to the market and enhance choice and freedom - let's hope so.

That might be the best outcome of this episode. Let's hope it happens. One company that controls nearly 90% of the market is never a good thing.

For those who might still be absurdly mistaken that judgement is being passed on Win8 without actually trying it, you should be aware that SIW2 is resident at EightForums providing much of the same foundational early-adaptive support for 8 as he did for 7. He created many of the workarounds and fixes that were pioneered at SevenForums and which it took years for MS own forums to catch up with.

When I was trying Win8 and needed similar workarounds he was the one who answered at 8Forums with deep-diving knowledge along with others who were also active in the early days of SevenForums as pioneers probing the new technology. All of this is hands-on shepherded by the best forums Admins in the world.

So when Si speaks those of us who have learned the most from him listen. He is not just a critic, but someone literally speaking from inside the OS.

Regardless to all of his other articles, which I've not read, this one here seems fairly balanced to me. My opinion. You feel differently, ok.

Perhaps you're missing those traveling business people, students, and everyday ma and pa's with their smartphones, tablets, and notebooks? They conduct business as well, and they don't want to be bogged down by a desktop.

If I need to get a file to my boss or whoever, I can just grab it out the cloud, or access my desktop via my mobile device and send it off. If I'm working on a file or project away from my desktop, I can just sync it trough my mobile devices so that all my PC's have the most recent file. We're no longer tied to a desktop. That's the future of mobile computing.

Window 8 proposes to tap into that market and make it even easier to work with a myriad of electronic mobile devices.

And I'm not saying Windows 8 is perfect, I'm just saying the idea behind it is on point. Fix a few things here and there, and both mobile and desktop users could have the best of both worlds.

    My two cents.

Desktop experience refers to laptops as well. I use one most of the time. Many use one interchangeably with Desktop PC with no performance diminution. It's tablets where the experience changes markedly.

I agree, and have posted the same sentiments in another thread over at eightforums. That said, we don't always have to agree with his assessments. Others have valid points and opinions as well.

This of course does not take away from the respect I have for his knowledge, insight, and contributions, here and the other forums.

In short we can agree to disagree agreeably and move on :)

When I speak of mobile devices, laptops (I call them notebooks for their size) are obviously included. But, as we know, sometimes laptops can behave slightly different than their desktop cousins. At any rate they are mobile so I include them

Maybe that is the new world for some people - being able to do everything from everywhere via the cloud. But I am not part of that world and I would suspect neither are most of the PC users.

When I am 'on the road', I am on vacation. And there I don't want to be bothered. That's one reason why I don't have a cell phone. But I do have a little Nexus 7 tablet. That I use for navigation and planning the excursions of the next day, the occasional phone call to make a reservation at the next hotel (I like to talk to real people and make sure my reservation requirements are understood. That is also one reason I only choose small hotels and not some of those mega chains). Else I use the tablet for some entertainement. But that's about all. I don't even check my mails. Those can wait until I am back home.

This new world is for a small segment of the active business people and they should have a convenient option to do their thing. But that is not enough reason to ruin the OS for the PC for the majority of the users.

Of course I can be wrong.
Monitoring things like web usage to judge how people are computing is dumb. I'm assuming that one can use a cell phone and a tablet on the web and still use a desktop or laptop to do their work and use the web.
A mobile device does not replace a desktop or laptop they are just another tool added to ones computing tool box.
Many things control computer sales other than operating systems.
I get a smell from the articles I read that they are assuming when one buys a Ipoke device they throw their desktop and laptop in the dumpster and will never use another one. Hog Bananas.
In my opinion the people and companies of the world can and will use all devices that meet their needs and desires.

If Microsoft would make a operating system that meets the needs of mobile devices and would have a option to meet the needs of desktops and laptops they could kill two birds with one flexible operating system.

I think that the Board Members and Executives of Microsoft are worried that the next thing Microsoft has built will be a gallows.
A change has to be made to improve sales of Windows 8 in both mobile and desktops/laptops.
To me that change has to be giving options to the consumer of what style of Windows 8 they want on what device.
This is my 2+2 must =4 thoughts.
