Microsoft introduces 'Starter' version of Office

actually a very good idea -

I've still got loads of CD's of that relatively useless product called Microsoft Works which seemed to "infest" typical bought PC's - with a lot of other bloatware. MS office (at least Word and EXCEL) will be appreciated here - and makes an upgrade fairly painless - and its also compatable with MS office people use at work (unless you are in one of those IBM shops still forced to use old Lotus products).

At work a lot of people also use power point - but whether this is really needed on home machines is another issue

If you need this type of application you can probably get a heavily discounted version of the full office suite anyway (Microsoft's Work at Home licenses can cost as little as 10 USD for participants in the program - if your work doesn't have this yet ask them about it).

I think though for Joe Public buying a new PC the lack of an email client in W7 could actually be more problematic than MS realizes.

Outlook express is generally the one used by Joe public on their XP machines.

It's all very well for us on these forums to say "use xxxx" etc but you are dealing with people who don't know what an email client is or how to install one.

They should bring OE back again or include a version of Outlook into the "starter office".
