Thank you for the info. Cleared 4.2 gigs on Win 7 32. I just installed Win 7 64 SP1 about a month ago & running cleanup, it cleared 153 MB
I'm guessing this isn't an option on Win 8.1? Or is it?

Teerex says there is a command for 8, (I'd assume 8.1).
A step-by-step project for a patient meddler - cleanup Windows 7 image

Wah! I didn't get any on my desktop (it's only 7-8 months old). I haven't dug out my notebook to update it yet (mayhap today?); it's 16 months old.
I think that you'll only get space back if you installed W7, updates and then installed SP1 separately.
If you installed from a newer "W7 + SP1" install disc, presumably there won't be any doubled up update entries in winsxs.
Windows Updates - Remove Outdated Updates in Windows 7To enable you to roll back to previous updates, updates are stored in the WinSxS store even after they are superseded by later updates. Therefore, after you run the Disk Cleanup wizard, you may be unable to roll back to a superseded update. If you want to roll back to a superseded update that the Disk Cleanup wizard deletes, you can manually install the update.

There have been plenty of updates since SP1 that have since been superseded by newer versions. This extra cleanup thing is certainly useful.
If I remember correctly there was a cleanup after SP1 was installed. Not sure if it was similar.
Yes, it seems to be similar. Makes you wonder why MS hadn't included this extra disk cleanup thing earlier.
Useful for them to do it now, as it may ameliorate somewhat the calls for SP2. MS may still end up doing SP2 next year, it depends how much pressure there is. They claim to be listening.
