SAN FRANCISCO—October 22, 2013—Apple® today announced that OS X® Mavericks, the 10th major release of the world’s most advanced desktop operating system, is available for free from the Mac App Store℠. With more than 200 new features, OS X Mavericks brings iBooks® and Maps to the Mac®, includes a new version of Safari®, enhances multi-display support, introduces Finder® Tabs and Tags and delivers new core technologies for breakthrough power efficiency and performance.

“Mavericks is an incredible release, which introduces significant new apps and features, while also improving the performance and battery life of your Mac,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “We want every Mac user to experience the latest features, the most advanced technologies, and the strongest security. We believe the best way to do this is to begin a new era of personal computing software where OS upgrades are free.”

It looks to me Apple is trying to fill the gap that Windows 8 has created.

OS X supports and offers new windowed apps on desktop OS that is better than what is in windows 8 with full screen mobile apps.

    Hi there
Maybe Apple is avoiding going Pearshaped as its latest iphones and ipads are not doing as well as they hoped.

Mind you I can never understand the mentality of these businesses that expect to grow hugely every year--how can you KEEP growing at even 10% once the market has matured with these sorts of products - especially as they are relatively high end consumer products.

Maybe a lot of people have TWO phones now --but THREE !!!

Apple though could do itself a huge favour by opening this OS up to standard (non Apple) Intel machines - I like the look of their new OS - and would probably consider using it myself -- keeping a VM for running Ms Office and Photoshop.

(I can't compare it with their previous OS'es though not being a MacBook user or having tablets / iphones).

    Cheers

That's one of the reasons I rant about the stock market.

The stock market expects unrealistic yearly growth levels and the businesses have to try to deliver those unrealistic growth levels or they risk being take over targets.

If the businesses can't maintain unrealistic yearly growth levels, the stock market "clowns" start panicking, which lowers the share price, then the shareholders start demanding answers and the "predators" start circling.

I thought that Office and Photoshop were available for Macs.
