I miss the excitement i felt when upgrading from 98 to XP, and then XP to Vista, and then Vista to more refined Vista (7).
No such thing felt since 2009
Give me pretty GUI along with those under the hood improvements and i'll upgrade to anything.

    An average Home PC user
That's the point. You hit the nail on the head. Those are the reasons why only few people are moving.

Unless they bring back Aero and glass, or at least get rid of the kindegarten flat, boring blocky look and feel, I won't be considering any move back to windows. Other things like a task manager with alzheimers, a gutted explorer, and a lack of accessible controls for configuring things without having to resort to registry hacks don't motivate me to consider windows any more either

Windows 8 should have been sold in two formats; a desktop (Aero-like) version, and a tablet (Metro) version. Windows 8 works well on tablets.

Windows 8.x ... it's like meeting a rattle snake in your bedroom.

With 4 rigs (AutoCad) I sleep with my Wn7 discs under my pillow.
My 71-year-old sister in law was given a "Notebook" with Win8 -- her very first computer.
When I showed her my Win7 with Classic Start and explained how it works. I am now her very best friend.
Maybe MS market research dept is asleep or fixated on new-toys.

If Win7 is outselling Win8.x ... MS cannot blame the tablet/android market.
