Its not unexpected to be perfectly honest, it is now, a 13 year old OS, just forces some loyal XP users to upgrade, not just in the respect of MSE but the fact they are cutting support across the board.
Several users that I support are simply leaving Windows based computers. Others will continue to use XP and I'll move them to another antivirus tool. Some elderly users will not upgrade to a new OS until their current hardware dies (but they might die first).
I help some people that are still using XP.
Do you have any recommendations on another free AV program?
I'm thinking of Bitdefender or Avira, but I've never used them...

Apologies, i mean for the elderly who dont have a working knowledge of computers, eg the average user.

    Hi David,

I was using WinXP until 3-4 weeks back and Avira still supports it, so does MBAM. I remember MBAM saving my PC from an infection acquired from school (via flashdrive). On a different occasion, Avira removed an infection MBAM couldn't. I have used both for quite a while in WinXP. You might want to check them out. :)

I've been paying attention to how many stores, doctor's offices, businesses are still on XP. I would bet money they are completely unaware the end is coming. And I would further speculate that the deadline will pass and they will still be clueless! They will think it is 'cool' that they are not getting nags to install updates anymore. And many will go merrily on their way like that.

I was in a tile warehouse recently and noticed they were using a DOS based inventory system! Invoice came out on dot-matrix.
    If it ain't broke......

    Hi Kathy,
I was going to check out Avira and found a thread in their forum about the download being re-directed to softonic.
There is a discussion about it at:
Why Softonic? - Avira Free Antivirus für Windows - Avira Support Forum

Just be careful if downloading Avira...

And looks like MBAM has a FP with database version v2014.01.15.07

I know avast still works on xp since my spare machine runs xp with avast just fine. Really old pc idk how long it has left since it runs a tad toasty but that might be just the case but anyways I know avast runs just fine on xp and still has full support.

    Thanks for that info Shawn!
It's good to know MS will support MSE beyond April 2014.
I've installed it for some folks that are still using XP.

I think the biggest hold back were companies that had a huge amount of computers that would have to have hardware and a operating system upgraded. Huge amounts of time, money and training would have to be spent.
We are experiencing a heatwave at the moment (supposed to end today ).

I noticed (during news reports) that the Emergency Services Control Centre is still using XP (on 40" or 50" flat screen monitors).
