The Internet Is Actually Controlled By 14 People Who Hold 7 Secret Key
Posted: 02 Mar 2014
This sounds like something out of a Dan Brown book, but it isn't: The whole Internet is controlled by seven actual, physical keys.
The Guardian's James Ball was recently allowed to observe the highly secure ritual known as a key ceremony.
The people conducting the ceremony are part of an organization called the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). ICANN is responsible for assigning numerical Internet addresses to websites and computers and translating them into the normal web addresses that people type into their browsers.
Interesting! I've heard about this before but to be honest I have always assumed this is one of those urban tech myths circulating, like the guys fooling Jen in the IT Crowd:

It's surprising how many standards are controlled by small groups of individuals, many of which are accidental, organic, organisations
One that I appreciate is the fact that the recipe for Gordons Gin, is known to only six people, and these people are not allowed to all meet in the same place - ever, and no two can ever travel together - at least some things are still sacred

How about the recipe for Coca Cola -- this might even be controlled by a secret machine and not a human at all. Isn't the recipe supposed to be installed in a nuclear bomb proof vault --- as someome once said only two things on this planet will survive a Nuclear war -- Cockroaches and the Recipe for coca cola --- co-incidence there perhaps !!!.
I think Coca Cola is still one of the world's richest companies to say nothing of the people who control it.
