Of course you can do it manually if you wish, but FEBE (or even MozBackup) just makes things easier and convenient.
I've never felt beholden because of it.

The Firefox Profiles folder and .ini file should be included as part of your ordinary data backups, and I've never felt the need to manually back up my Firefox profiles outside of my normal backup routine. Therefore, I don't see a lot of value in an extension for this, and like all code, the extension can have bugs. I like to mention this because it's unusual for a program to be so friendly to what is essentially an xcopy backup/restore of its entire configuration, doubly so for it to be transferable to other machines, and I think many people would be surprised that it's possible and so simple.
Without getting into a pissing match of sorts over this, Crawfish, I'm aware of the stuff in appdata and I do image and file backups too. Of course, lots of folks aren't so diligent, or are apt to know where things are. Anyhow, over the years FEBE backup/restore has been fine by me, and never failed. Firefox extensions can make certain things nice & convenient. They are a reason why I stick with this browser. Bottom line, it was just a recommendation/suggestion -- something to check out, and not totally worthless IMO.
My problem with Firefox 29 is that the only buttons I ever used can't be put how I had them before. I had the favorites at the top left, where the menu is now. And I had the back/forward button (always present forward button, not this dynamic button garbage) at the top left. So basically everything is messed up with no way to put it back (without resorting to plugins, which I shouldn't have to do just to have a browser that isn't chrome)
I Down(up?)graded back to Firefox 28 for the thinner tabs and better custimizability. You cannot disable(or at least hide) the URL/Navigation bar in Firefox 29.
i used chrome until a week ago, that's when i realized its so freaking slow starting up, and when it goes "Not Responding" you want to punch your computer, i knew that oprea and ie11 was a choice, but i choose firefox, and Honestly I'm Very Impressed! Super fast, no pop up window that takes tons of space for downloads like chrome. Overall

Very good update Mozilla!
For those that don't like FF 29, take a look at Pale Moon.
