Microsoft updating terms of use and privacy statement

    Posted: 12 Jun 2014
In an email today to its customers, Microsoft has announced new terms of use and privacy statement:

We're updating our terms of use and privacy statement.

Our users' needs are at the centre of everything we do. That's why we are updating the Microsoft Services Agreement and providing a Privacy Statement for Windows Services. We want to take this opportunity to highlight some of the key changes and what they mean for you.

    Privacy
As part of our ongoing commitment to respecting your privacy, we won't use your documents, photos or other personal files or what you say in email, chat, video calls or voice mail to target advertising to you.

    Transparency
We updated our Code of Conduct so that you can understand better the types of behaviour that could affect your account, and added language that parents are responsible for minor children's use of Microsoft account and services, including purchases.

    Simplicity
We tailor our privacy statements for each of our products to help make it easier for you to find the information that is important to you.

The Microsoft Services Agreement applies to your Microsoft account and includes many of our consumer services such as Outlook.com, OneDrive and Bing, while the privacy statement explains how your personal information is collected, used and protected across your Microsoft account, Outlook.com and OneDrive.

The new updates to these will take effect on 31 July 2014. If you continue to use our services after 31 July 2014, you agree to the updated terms or, if you don't agree, you can cancel your service at any time.

We encourage you to use the links below for further details and to view the full agreements online.

Thank you for using Microsoft products and services.

    This makes me laugh

Their first statement is a laughable punch line. I think since 2003 Microsoft has lost it's way and users are nothing more then a nuisance to them.

Well at least now it makes a little more sense as to why after loading the last round of windows updates after booting and first opening ie10 and got a second tab opening with a ie9 privacy statement,
Doesn't explain why it was listed as a ie9 statement but at least the statement now makes sense
I personally just closed it after seeing ie9 but thanks for posting it has not showed back up,
    Cheers.

    Privacy
As part of our ongoing commitment to respecting your privacy, we won't use your documents, photos or other personal files or what you say in email, chat, video calls or voice mail to target advertising to you.

We do however, reserve the right, to blanket advertise to you. This means that we can ensure that you will receive totally irrelevant advertising which you might or might not be interested in receiving.

Just because we don't use any information in your files on our servers, doesn't mean we don't know who you are.

I received an email today with this information, but the senders address was: email[at]microsoft[dot]microsoft[dot]com

Also the the hyperlinks were very strange looking, and started with http://microsoft[dot]microsoft[dot]com/

I don't want to post them, so as to not make problems for anyone else, but I suspect a phishing scam.

Can anyone confirm this, or please point me in the right direction?

    Hi there

This is another load of Corporate and Lawyers C.R.U.D

Does anybody really think that 99% of Ms users will even READ or CARE about this sort of stuff --typical corporate e-mail waste of time. Wonder how much management time etc this nonsense actually cost to produce and send -- and probably somebody at Goldman Sachs was getting paid 1,000 USD AN HOUR for this.

Shows exactly why e-mail is beginning to become totally useless as a decent corporate tool.

I'll bet loads of people just treated this as SPAM. This type of stuff is just like the sort of Long pages of text / small print on Airline tickets, train tickets, the paperwork when you get a domestic appliance etc - and nobody ever reads that garbage anyway.

BTW How many of you ever READ the stuff printed on Airline tickets or Train tickets --I'll bet it might come as a surprise that an Airline or railway carrier isn't obliged to transport you AT ALL - even if you've paid the full fare -- but this stuff never would get to a court as the snivelling lawyers could always find some exclusion -- like on Insurance policies with an exclusion clause ..."An Act of God" .

IK got this email yesterday. IMHO, this is what it really means

    Privacy
We will continue to collect personal information and sell it to the highest bidder

    Transparency
If anything goes wrong it's the parents fault. We'll come after them first

    Simplicity
We don't like consistency or "one size fits all". We want to be able to independently fill your system with garbage, capture everything you do and make more money.

    ok, ok, I'm a cynic

    Hi there

Information unfortunately is always passed out to 3rd parties whatever the "Terms of Service and conditions" state. You would probably not be able to win a case even with the wisdom of Solomon etc.

In the UK TV license inspectors can actually demand a right to enter your home whether or not you have a "TV License" or not - and they don't need Police attendance either. Even Civil Bailiff's can't enter without your permission unless a Court order is obtained (and that only happens for "High Court" enforcements -- not in typical "bog standard" civil disputes).
However you don't have to let them in - but most people don't actually know that --takes a grumpy old foreigner like me to send them packing !!!

These people think they can enter and make notes without an appointment -- you have to prove you DO NOT need a UK TV license -- not the ther way around -- Guilty unless proved innocent -- and you can go to Jail for not having one -- I'd really laugh if someone was sent to jail caught while watching "Big Brother" -- seems appropriate though !!!

So any statement of privacy etc - is totally meaningless -- for example every snivelling thing you do at your Bank is Sold on to agencies like EXPERIAN (credit agency) which is then accessible by 3rd parties so your saving, spending, earnings etc are available all over the place without your knowledge or agreement.

So I re-iterate this whole Ms stuff is a total meaningless waste of time.

Note under UK (English / not Scottish) Law you can protect yourself though from unauthorized visits - in case law only the Postman and people asking for directions can actually visit your property without a police / court warrant.

    English Case law reference :

    Armstrong v Sheppard & Short Ltd [1959] 2 QB 384. per Lord Evershed M.R.).

Hopefully this info is of use to some people in England -- note Scotland has a different legal system -when getting stupid mail or attempted visits from "Jobsworth" officials who think they have more powers than they really do.

    Cheers
