XP was very good once SP2 and then SP3 where put in place. The 64 bit XP was also very good. They were good until about 2010 when old age and lack of new hardware support set in. Hard to install XP on SATA drives. No support for SSD and so on. Time to move on to a newer OS. Anyone still running XP unsupported connected to the internet is asking for trouble. Now there are versions of XP which are still supported. I switched from XP to Seven in 2010. Prior to XP I was on 2000 and before that NT4, 98SE,98,95, Amiga OS. There is absolutely no harm in running XP disconnected from the internet to play old games or use old programs just be careful.

I liked XP-64 Pro and used it for years.
But lets face it folks it's time to put XP in a well deserved rest home.
What ever companies that still use XP have had years of notices (warnings) to upgrade.
It will continue to cost more to keep a update XP in use.
The day will come I will have to get up off of Windows 7. Hopefully Microsoft will have something I like and can use when the time comes.
It must make Microsoft feel proud knowing it's biggest competitor is Microsoft.

Sad to say either i am going Win 10 or 8.1 soon when Broadwell or Skylake arrives i know it's going to be a culture shock but support will be going away soon Linux is a good option but seeing that they are trying to intergrade everything to a one style platform might as well do it before it is really forced on you

Just install Linux mint mate 17.1 on my laptop
That's now on 2 machines I'm liking it as a new toy,
8 and 10 well that is a dilemma
10 will no doubt eat my 8.1 license but I'd rather clean install it for the custom install to kill as much as possible before it activates.
Otherwise I might just get a first release oem as well for a future build it is slightly better than 8-8.1 but it's still early to know how much better than 8.1.

People don't ned to PAY --there's loads of Support users groups and hobbyists keeping XP alive.

I'm always amazed how people are "scammed" into paying for stuff they don't need to pay for.
Actually I'm one of those who will be keeping XP for a long while --I have some expensive hardware that only runs on XP and it still works perfectly so I've got a decent XP VM set up.
I'm retiring W7 soon as everything I can run on W7 works PERFECTLY on Windows 10 --had a number of issues (apart from than Menu thing !!) on W8 / W8.1 so I went to W10 instead and now I won't even be keeping W7 soon as a VM --but XP will be around on my system for a few years yet. !!!
Some of the hardware -- expensive studio VINYL cutting and record creating hard and software, some Minidisc recorders (still great for Live gigs etc), HP plotter and engineering blue printing hardware, expensive high quality photo scanner and negative ==>digitiser for old film negatives etc.
This gear works very well --I'm not throwing it away just because it doesn't run on modern OS - this hardware is TOP NOTCH and EXPENSIVE.
There's lots of DECENT reasons as to why XP can still stay around -- provided you are aware of the limitations and run these ideally as VM's and in stand alone situations there's nothing wrong with using XP (especially as a VM).

try CENTOS 7 for a STABLE long term support Linux - based on (actually IS the desktop version) of RED HAT Enterprise Linux -- never has a SINGLE problem with it. Stable, Robust Enterprise level of an OS !!! For multimedia etc you need to add some repos but well worth the extra effort and will work until 2026 !!!!! if I'm still around by then.
Windows 10 though for a number of other things I use is turning out to be OK -- no mega complaints so far - apart from that Store.
Businesses instead of paying 400 USD for XP support should think about running XP as VM's in "stand alone mode" and then access a modern OS for their Internet / email applications. At the worst paying a small Corporate Site license for VMWARE workstation or the commercial vmplayer will be HUGELY cheaper than paying indefinitely huge amounts for maintaining a bunch of PC's.
Any company that recommends the "Maintenance of XP" route rather than thinking about some "Virtual Desktop Infrastructure" should FIRE those responsible or take the difference between the maintenance fee and the virtual solution out of their Salary. !!!!!

Good suggestion Jimbo I'm alright with mate till 2019,
My issues with 10tp are well known and If I loose another hdd because of it that's deal breaker for me,
Just because Intel has rapid fire doesn't mean Microsoft should act as every mother board supports it and sleeps hdd's on shut down.

SourceWindows XP, in the minds of many, still remains the greatest operating system to ever grace the PCs of the world. Windows XP was indeed an excellent OS, but the software support for it ended last year after XP celebrated its 13-year anniversary. As a result, Microsoft only allows continued support for businesses for a fee, which is said to jump up sometime in April of this year.
As it stands, commercial users of Windows XP pay around $200 per PC annually to see software support for the now-retired OS, but in two months the cost of support is expected to jump to $400 per PC annually, with a possible cap of $500,000 for an entire business should the number of supported PCs exceed the half-million dollar mark. As of this moment, the annual cap sits at $250,000.
