DirectX 12 rumored to allow combining AMD and Nvidia cards on same PC

Microsoft's upcoming DirectX 12 is rumoured to feature a revolutionary API that would enable users to combine graphics cards from AMD and Nvidia.

PC gaming enthusiasts could be in for a treat if the latest rumour from Tom's Hardware is true. So far gamers have been able to combine multiple AMD cards or Nvidia cards using Crossfire or SLI, respectively but they cannot be combined with each other.

However, the latest rumour suggests that Microsoft could make such a combination possible and remove the dependence on manufacturer restrictions with its next DirectX release in Windows 10.

Me too. I'd love to be able to pair a GTX 970 with one of my 290s and see how it goes.

It's all with NVIDIA and AMD if they would even ALLOW it.

I seriously doubt Nvidia will. AMD has already offered to share Mantle, which is very similar to DX12 in terms of low level access, and Nvidia has refused.

Well if the cards are Direct X 12 compatible the processing will be done at a low level so AMD/ATI and NVidia and even to some extent Intel HD (Video in the CPU) won't have much say in it. If the card is Direct X compatible to get the DX12 logo and certification from M$ what we M$ do at the lower level is not your issue. You just meet our driver guidelines and we M$ will do the rest.

I wouldn't be getting too excited just yet. You really think Nvidia will go along with something like this? How many years has it been that they have been blocking using a Nvidia card for Physx with a stronger AMD card?
