Microsoft will offer a free upgrade to Windows 10 for qualified Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8.1 devices in the first year.

So all the qualified users will be able to upgrade. Once it is upgraded, it will be subject to clean reinstalls via ISO. Nobody said it yet that the OEM users will not be able to perform a clean reinstall using an ISO image. Those are only panic, some attempts to find something that is not said.

OEM users will not be at any loss at all, because OEM license will be continued for lifetime of the device with its all rights.

How people migrated from Vista to 7?
How people migrated from 7 to 8?

By paying for the license of the new OS.

Now there is an avenue to migrate to 10, not by paying for the now OS but by having a qualified previous version.

There will be terms and conditions for the upgrade. Panicking without knowing it is negativity. If the terms and conditions does not suit me, I will not accept the offer. Fair and simple.

Linux is a different story, it is a part of the Open-Source Movement. It will be nothing but stupidity to compare it with a commercial product like windows.

Rationalize it anyway you want too,

If 10 is indeed free why worry about a retail license = because it's not free.

And for the record 8 was free to me but it still requires a previous version to be activated in a traditional manner,
Or use Shawn's .bat file to get around it to install clean.

Yea I didn't want to throw down the Linux card but is the only example of a free os.

10 is indeed free, my question is how my retail license will be transformed. If the deal does not suit me, I will not accept it. But my 8.1 laptop will definitely be upgraded accepting the offer.

Acceptance or rejection of an offer is on me only. I will wait for it before taking the final decision, but I will not panic.

I am not a serious user of 8 or 8.1, did not have/use it before the new laptop came (and I use it for typewriting anywhere and carrying only) so I dont know more of it. But, as far as I know, 8 was never free. Initially there was a cheap upgrade, but it was never free for users. Though 8.1 was a free upgrade for legit 8 users. May be you have some privilege to get 8 for free, which commoners did not have.

it sits collecting dust on a flash drive = unused.

That is a gift from a friend, which is far far away from the concept of a free OS.

However, that would leave oem installs out in the cold because from what I read the keys to download a windows 7 image only works for retail and there has been other issues.

I said I think & I could be wrong. Twitter is limited, so GabeAui can't really go into full details.

I read windows 7 post people could only use retail keys to download the Windows 7 retail at Microsoft recovery site, oem keys didn't work to download an iso image but retail keys did but there were issue even with some retail keys. I haven't seen anywhere you can download an iso image for windows 7 if you are using an oem.

On the other side of the coin here, Create installation media for Windows 8.1 - Windows Help you can get 8.1 install media without having to enter any product code. It will use Windows 8.0 and 8.1 keys even OEM embedded keys. Microsoft could easily set one up like this for Windows 10.
