I think the poster meant that you install windows 7 clean in a virtual media in Linux, do a quick connection to activate windows 7 if needed. Then disconnect the virtual Ethernet connection. Then use windows 7 for your favorite software that won't work with wine. I really don't like virtual box, I find the screen to small for me.
Some a hole way up the corporate ladder got his 1 Billion Windows 10 users in a year quota today.
Yes you would have to watch for the same behaviour. The way I would do it was to install 7 in the VM, activate and update it but disable 10 updates and then disconnect it. You could then use it to run software such as games etc that would not run under wine. Crossover by Codewaevers is an answer to some issues and I shall be getting several versions / copies of that for a Xmas present for myself. Microsoft have turned a fully fledged Windows Geek into someone who now wants out of the whole Windows ecosystem. Microsoft have always been azzholes but now they have shown their true despicable lack of respect for their customers. It is MY Machine and I decide what goes on it.
