I've about had it up to here with this cat and mouse game they are playing.

I've decided to severely limit all Internet access and activity when using Windows. I'll check the SANS critical update list each month and patch those "critical" ones only, then back to my self imposed Windows Internet ban.

As I have recently retired there are no longer work related reasons to use Windows as Linux does over 90% of what I now need - only big exceptions are using Lightroom and Video Studio (Windows only)...but neither requires Internet access.

Agreed 100%. I love Windows 7. How can it have all gone this pear shaped? I am not transitioning to Windows 10 even for free on my numerous machines. he next OS going on the drives will be Linux Mint. I'll keep using 7 till EOL but with https://www.codeweavers.com/products/ (paid solution) enabling you to run Windows software under Linux and also VMWare Workstation has a Linux version I can also run Virtual Machines like I do now. Microsoft is plain lying about their data collection and I no longer trust them or the software so I won't be using it in the long term.
I have been using various flavors of Linux since 1998 (or was it 1999?) and currently have two computers loaded with Linux Mint 17.2 (I like Cinnamon). Also use live versions of Puppy (Slacko) and Knoppix Linux for heavy lifting.

Codeweaver is a nice product and I have no problem paying for good software - just wish it would work with the three or four Windows only packages I need to use.

    Regards,
    GEWB

I would of thought if you do Option one here - Upgrade to Windows 10 Update - Enable or Disable in Windows 7 or 8.1 - Windows 10 Forums that it should go away forever.
Nope. These guys are relentless. Wish you could feel our pain. hehehe I said up-front when W10 rolled out that they would do this. We'll have to see who wears out first ... when I've had enough it's Linux here I come!

I don't bother hiding most of these 10 updates because they return so I just leave them in the Optional updates queue to collect dust
I just let it download the installer and let the apps migrate to W10 so I can upgrade later on

Makes you wonder what happens after the free year upgrades expires for windows 10, does another update come done and remove the upgrade updates or if you do a clean install of 7 or 8.x does the windows 10 upgrade patches not install?

I guess I'm more sad than angry. Still like W7, but am spending most of my time on Linux Zorin. Using W7 Pro on my music computer, but that is rarely online. I’m doing Linux tutorials so I'll be proficient by 2020. Zorin is very W7-like, maybe the most of any Linux OS. I love it. but it's sad we have to do this. Windows was a great OS, but it's days as such are numbered. Heck, I'd pay 50.00 or more for a Linux OS that is as user-friendly as Windows. But as I'm told this is unlikely, I'm going to become Linux-literate.

My guess is they will probably send out another update to remove them. The Get Windows 10 app will be useless after the initial free upgrade period, unless it somehow redirects you to the store to buy a copy.

Pretty sure the telemetry updates will be here to stay though.

It's actually been rather enjoyable for me. Sure, there's been a bit of poking around and messing with config type files and the like, but I'm having great success running Debian "Jessie"/KDE on my new laptop that came with Windows 8.1. I've even got Steam and some games like Minecraft running fine on it too.

After customizing it to my liking without the need of any additional software, it has the best desktop UI I've ever used.

I'll still be using Windows 7 on my main computer for the long haul though, since I run a lot of custom Windows programs on it and I rather like Windows 7.

The plan is quite clear now.

Keep releasing these "junk" updates until the user eventually screws up and installs them.
Shortly thereafter your PC will mysteriously upgrade itself to W10.

And IF (a mighty BIG if) that ever happens, I'll just restore to a previous image.
