Why they didn't implement this in the first place, I'll never understand.
I see in the comments section people are complaining about "giving up" their Windows 7/8 key.
Nowhere have I read you will be "giving up" your original key. They're giving you an upgrade using your original key. They're not taking the original key away from anyone.

Seems like the most logical approach to activate win-10
If a key is invalid M$ will know it then or soon after
