25 Years: How the Web began

    Posted: 21 Dec 2015
25 years ago there was the Internet, but there was no Web. Then, Tim Berners-Lee proposed creating an Internet-based hypertext system and the Web was on its way.

When I was a young man, we had it rough. We used to have to get up out of the shoebox at twelve o'clock at night and lick the road clean with our tongue. We had two bits of cold gravel, worked twenty-four hours a day at mill for sixpence every four years, and when we got home our Dad would slice us in two with a bread knife and while we had the Internet we didn't have the Web. And, when you tell the young people today that... and they won't believe ya!*

I used the Internet for years before there was a Web, but when Tim Berners-Lee proposed the Web, an Internet-based hypertext system, to his boss at CERN, the European Particle Physics Laboratory, we didn't know it but we were on the brink of a revolution...

Let's hear it from us old farts! I first was on the Internet in '91 before the World Wide Web gained traction. Mosaic was my first browser in the fall of '93. Following that I actually PAID for browser software! (All true.)

And when I went to school I walked two miles, up hill both ways! (Not all true.)

I knew these kids today wouldn't believe it... (True.)

I can (and do) honestly say I walked two miles up hill both ways to school. Because my house was at the bottom of the hill and the school was at the bottom of the hill on the other side. I just conveniently leave out he point that I also walked down hill both ways.

OH, the good old days. My kids, years ago, asked if I lived in a black and white world with no color
as all my old photos were in black and white, of course. I love the old days. I live some of the old days.
But having a search engine at my finger tips now to investigate anything imaginable is so cool.
No more dealing with the Dewey Decimal System at the library. (It is computerized now.)
I only listen to music I burned or have on SD or USB (thousands of them) from 1955 to 1970.
WHERE WERE YOU IN '62? (American Graffiti) I loved it.

Born and raised in a coalmining village, I managed to get a place at a Technical School from 11 years old. I rode my bike 8 miles to school and back when I could, up and down several hills. My dad was 40 when I was born, last of 3 brothers much older than I, and dad came to be badly injured during my school years. I used to get up at 5 am, deliver newspapers, come home, grab a breakfast and ride to school. In the evenings I delivered more papers before tea and home work. On Saturdays I had a butchery delivery round and on Sundays I cleaned the butcher shop and windows. I felt compelled to work, in order to help out.

I don't subscribe to the "Don't know they're born" brigade though. I am so glad that my kids and grandkids have a diferent life to my own, that is how it should be, otherwise there is no human progress. I built my eldest grandson's first computer when he was 11 years old, now he is a network engineer with a fabulous job. I built his cousin's computer at around the same age and he is studying mechanical engineering. I came late to computing in my 50's and even later to the internet, but the most pleasing thing for me is that it all goes somewhere that leads to progress with each generation.

I got hooked on computers a long time ago with a Timex/Sinclair.
Then I moved up to a computer I bought on Home Shopping Center.
I remember when dial up was the cats meow. WoW 56K.
I have never worked in a computer field. I'm have always been a home user that likes to build computers for my own use.
I had to find something to do at home to keep my 3 brain cells busy.
When computers came into the automobile it wasn't that challenging.
You really don't learn how things work.
**Do test (A). If you get results (B) replace part (C). Not much of a challenge.**
Obviously more testing needs to be done.

Their lied the problem. Once you replaced part (C) the auto manufacture stopped paying and you would have to continue testing on your dollar if you wanted to continue testing. So to keep food on the my table I stopped testing and got to something else that paid.

Now when something on one of my systems has a problem I just keep testing until I find the problem/s. Thankfully I seldom have problems.
This forum does give me the opportunity to help other with problems when I can, using the things I have learned through the years.

For you youngins, try to remember their was a time when a desk top was just that, the top of a desk and nothing more.
A laptop was the part of your lap that the cat laid on.
Their was no bottled water, garbage bags, twist off bottle caps and no dial up modems at a whopping 56k. Oh how I liked to listen to the sounds the dial up made while trying to connect.

Ahhh the 56k dialup modem, how could we forget those? Used to take about a week to download one song. That's as long as the connection didn't drop (which it often did) and you had to start all over again.

    I Heard About It

When all of this was going on my family lived in a paper bag in the middle of the road.
