Deny = state that one refuses to admit the truth or existence of.

Since there is no proof the adoption rates of W10 are due to a forced installation, it can't be true. Therefore there is nothing to deny.

Hardly over 10% after long, long time aggressive marketing, offering for free, with dozens of spam-like KB updates (invasions) injected to most pc's across the world, results certainly nothing to brag about.

iMO, if there was any real alternative to MS (mac, linux, google not yet there), 10 would have gone the way of windows phone > down the drain.

Oh yeah, like there was a GWXP, GWVista, GWVII, and a GWVIII and all those upgrades were all free. It shouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure out the main reason for Win 10's rapid adoption rate.

Agreed.

Moreover, if (extremely hypothetically) in July MS were to say "Ok the free time is up, in order to get ongoing support you now have the choice between paying full retail price for your Windows 10 installation or we will enable you to roll it back to Windows 7/8.1" is anyone seriously going to suggest that most Windows 10 users would stump up the cash rather than accept a rollback?

According to the ATM Industry Association (ATMIA), there are now close to 3 million ATMs installed worldwide. The PCI SSC estimates that Windows XP powers 95% of ATMs in the world. Many operators have already moved or are in the process of moving their systems to Windows 7. A paper from the ATM Industry Association (ATMIA) warns that ATMs need to be updated "without delay" with 2020 in mind, because Windows 7 will reach end of life at this time. But the ATMIA has also hinted that the future may not lie with Windows at all. Android or Linux is a high probability.

A lot of people actually like W10

And a lot do not. Both of those points are irrelevant. The point is the adoption rate of Win 10 would not have been as fast had it not been free and if Microsoft hadn't made it so easy and "convenient" to upgrade (and I use the word "upgrade" loosely).

I think how the adoption rates were achieved is completely irrelevant too.

The fact is W10 has overtaken XP, and a fact is still a fact, even if it's inconvenient to some.

No one has said that Win 10 has overtaken XP. What we are discussing is how unimportant that fact is since it is being compared to an OS that reached EOL almost two years ago and because of the tactics used to accelerate the adoption rate of Win 10, which has no bearing on how popular it is or isn't.

I'm pretty sure the article quoted in post #1 is about W10 overtaking XP, not the morality of it.
