I got rid of WLM 2012 a while ago because some of my MS email accounts had been converted, and some hadn't been converted.
I switched to Mozilla Thunderbird portable available at
Portable App Directory | PortableApps.com - Portable software for USB, portable and cloud drives
Then you could test it without installing the program.

It's more complicated configuring than WLM, but it works well for me, and i like it better than WLM.

It's not that complicated, even more, you can set it up like the mail app (So it doesn't download the full contents, instead, everything is online, ala Outlook.com cell app) Yes... SMTP servers are still frustrating (gmail and yahoo are way faster and respond better), but it's way better once you get used to it.

I switched to thunderbird about a month and half ago, I don't regret it. I was fed up with all the sluggishness and slowness of the Outlook.com web interface (It's slow in every browser and system, it's just... uuuuuuuggghhh!!).

Just for entertaining, I also replaced the .... arg... stupid cellphone app too with Bluemail... I was just tired of Microsoft not adding support for extenal SD cards (YOu cannot attach anything from a external SD card, because the app can't NEVER access to that...) And Bluemail also supports another services, like Gmail and yahoo, so I just use one app for everything. Quite convenient

That's a nightmare! They cannot get rid of IMAP access... Please God no! The web interface is slow as hell, it's a pain to check stuff and accounts one by one!

Probably they will just get rid of POP3, getting rid of IMAP will break not only Thunderbird, but also many more email clients, not to mention mobile apps that are good alternatives to that crappy official one.

If they try to get rid of IMAP, that means they are trying to force people into their official apps, or the web interface, both plagged of adds... And that IS A DIRTY move, as mud...

Why M$, why are you ruining everything?

Aparently, M$ will not drop support for POP/IMAP, just that special Windows Live/Outlook Syncronization... a protocol only used for the Windows Live Mail Application.

Well, if they aren't dropping IMAP/POP then we should be able to carry on using WLM 2012, it will just need all the accounts reconfigured to work.

Fortunately, the second link includes instructions to change that setting in WLM 2012, you just change from Live Sync to IMAP or POP, that does the trick according to them.

For the people setting up their IMAP accounts in TB, if you feel syncronization is slow, a thing that worked for me is:



This will, instead of download all mails from your account, just retrive information headers and content directly from the server. You will also save a lot of space (my stuff was taking about 5 GB in my HDD... ouch!, now it hardly takes 40 MB, easy to backup). This also speesdup reading and working with your emails and applies with Outlook.com, Gmail and Yahoo accounts, I ignore if other supported servers work too as I don't have accounts on any other server.

Looks like they'll definitely be continuing to support POP/IMAP.
I just setup a new test account and got the new outlook layout (all my previous ones are still on the old layout). So there is no reason we will have to stop using WLM 2012, it will just be a case of removing and re-adding the accounts with IMAP or POP whichever you prefer.

Yep, WLM 2012 will still work with Outlook, Brds7t7.

However, all users or this app, be warned, if you use IMAP or POP, automatic contact and callendar syncronization will not work as it used to be. Cannot be helped since M$ tied those to email sync with their private protocol. But at least, you can still use WLM to check your mails, which is a big win over the bloated Outlook.com web interface.
