I recently put a CPU temperature monitoring program in my system tray. Yesterday I was doing the "Check for Updates" routine, and noticed that my CPU temps soared to nearly 70c. Is this normal? The "Check for Updates" lasted an hour.

Spence, KB3161664 is a kernel update; if you don't have it installed or have it installed incorrectly it will cause increased work for the CPU

KB3161664 will not install for me no matter what I do. I downloaded the standalone and double clicked on it - the installer sat there foor at least 15 mins at "looking for Windows Updates". This is on WIndows 7 x64 SP1 Enterprise.

EDIT: Scratch that. As soon as I copied the update to the desktop - I was golden.

And then when I rechecked WU - the other 8 important items this cycle came down in about a minute. Much better than last month.

Yep as long as you remember to disconnect from the internet or switch the update settings to never check for updates and restart the update should install in a few minutes.

TZ, do you have a link to Brds post on that "other thread" about KB3161608? WU sent 1608 to me "late" and I wanted to read up on it to check it out.

Just a note to all here.

I, like WAY too many people, have this long delay before updates download & install.
Watching the system it seems that Windows update is running for an extended time - no doubt scanning the installation, although it seems far far too long in doing it.
If you wait until cpu usage drops back to normal (when WU stops running its scan) then the downloads start immediately.
    ie wait for it !!

    Concerning KB3161608

Well! That was a pleasant surprise! I just hope it keeps up for July's patch Tuesday.

The particulars, all times are EDT:

    • Started installation of the KB3161608 update at 10:55:10, it immediately went to 5% downloaded, after 1minute 38%.

    • At 2minutes 43% down, it seemed to stall.

    • At 4minutes went directly to 100% done at 10:59:05. Iirc; Back in the day, the percentile and the status bar would seem to stall, but it only indicated that a larger file was been downloaded, and of course everyone experienced different timings because of what type of hardware they had installed [CPU, RAM, HDD] and how their machines were setup.

    • Created restore point, done at 10:59:56.

    • Installing, done at 11:01:10.

    • Requested restart of machine, 11:01:12.

    • Completed restart and back to desktop at 11:05:32

    • Total time, 10minutes:22seconds.

The only thing that I'm slightly disappointed in is the download time. With my internet speed I should have had the package in less than 2minutes, but this is working with the windows servers and I'll take the 4minutes for a 27.6 MB file.

I'm beginning to see a definite improvement on my VM's even without KB3161608 installed. Mine seem to have gotten better after the last round of Security updates were installed.
Scan times seem to be back to normal, downloads still could be a little better but at least it's picking them up quickly.

I'm also noticing an improvement in machine performance since installing KB3161664 and now KB3161608, I'm hoping it stays that way.
