No, I never had the laptop activation key. It was upgraded to Windows 7 Professional before the Windows 10 "Stuxnet" upgrade.

    Hi,
You have a activation key for 7 home premium ?
That will not work for your pro version for sure :)

Not sure what can be done about that
There is a key finder utility can't remember what it's called
I'll message someone possibly they will remember what it is.
This one should do it Showkey - Windows 10 Forums

Try using ShowKeyPlus and click on retrieve key from backup then point it to windows.old/windows/system32/config folder and see if if can pull your old key from the software hive file.

    Showkey works on both machines.

On my main machine, it shows both the original Windows 7 Ultimate key that is on the box with my DVDs and a new key for Windows 10. It correctly sees no OEM key in firmware.

On my laptop, it shows both licenses, sees the OEM Windows 7 key, and correctly identifies the Windows 7 license as Windows 7 Pro Retail.

This leaves me with a source of Windows 7 installation files for my laptop. I presume that I can't use my Ultimate DVD unless the validation code sets the license level or some such.

I'm not sure I'm following what you are doing, but if you need a different copy of Windows to match one of your keys then you can grab an ISO direct from Microsoft using the ISO downloader tool the page here Microsoft Windows and Office ISO Download Tool

My laptop came with an OEM copy of Windows 7 Home, upgraded though the OS with Microsoft to Windows 7 Pro.

I think I'll use your Link to the MS courtesy site to get new DVDs for both the laptop and the main machine. The DVDs I have on hand for my main machine say Service Pack 1 on the box and date to June 2011.

Anyone know if this will install Windows 7 "over" Windows 10 and preserve some installations, are am I back to the fresh-disk-installation-with-data-files-but-no-installed-SW level?

My DVD in the box is labeled SP1 as is the MS file. I think I'll use the DVD and the sequence of KB updates recommended above for the main machine. I think that the sequence of KB updates is probably a good idea for the laptop, too.

    Sequence, from @ThrashZone (thread):

    1. Download updates for KB3020369 & KB3125574 & KB3172605.
    2. Install W/O Internet connection.
    3. Switch update settings to Never Update. If the Windows Update process is running, kill it. You may now connect to the Internet.
    4. Manually install the update for KB3020369.
    5. Manually install the update for KB3125574.
    6. Manually install the update for KB3172605.
    7. Restore Windows Update options, but you may want to approve each update instead of installing everything automatically.

    Hi,
    Sounds about right :)
There have been some new rollups that might be worth doing but I have yet to test them to see if any prerequisites are required to install either one
Brds7t7 posted them the underlined one is security only :)

If you want the Security Quality Rollup (which includes everything), then it's here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3185330 these will eventually be cumulative sometime in 2017.

If you want the Security-only update then that's from here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3192391 this won't be cumulative.
