That article is nothing but the "gospel" according to MS. It smells like just another cheap, desperate MS ploy to get people off Win 7 onto Win 10 since Win 10's market share is still half that of Win 7's, even with the sneaky tactics MS has employed to try to trick people onto Win 10.
I've had no problems keeping malware off my Win 7 machines. But, then again, I don't depend on MS updates only to keep my machines clean.

What if windows 10 doesn't work on your system, switch to another operating system? I already dual boot anyway.
Whilst the OS is supported fully on a security basis by both Microsoft and the 3rd party security companies it as secure as it can be.
Also the information and experience of the growth of complexity in Malware has been retrospectively added to all fully updated copies of the OS.
Unfortunately, there may be certain advances in the Malware development that are not patchable on the old security model so would have to rely on additional 3rd party protection for full safety. In this situation a Zero day exploit not picked up, (It does happen), could find an open invitation from the OS.
I actually believe that Windows 7 is as safe as it can be and have no problems in it's use but over the next three years until end of life if Malware keeps getting more capable I do not know how long this will be the case - best keep vigilant and fully updated :)
I don't use a free AV system (I currently use Bitdefender Total Security 2017 Multi-device) I have stopped using my licensed Malwarebytes since the disaster of the release of V3.0.
I did run Comodo Internet security (the free version ) as I liked the Industrial quality Firewall( available Stand-alone if wanted without the other bits) and HIPS that is included with a reasonable AV Comodo products do have a learning curve
I think that the Microsoft offerings have got better over time but the original MSE and Defender is let down by the firewall (it can be improved but is still weaker IMO then the alternatives)

I'm amazed by the number of geeks who praise MSE despite it rating so low in AV comparisons (I also had problems with it not updating back when I tried it). I've been using AVAST free but it has become too feature bloated (although it hasn't slowed my computer any) so I'm thinking of trying Panda Cloud even though it isn't rated quite as high as AVAST free.
But How Could this be!!??!!

I haven't seen any issues with panda free although I am using version 17 and not 18
Just did not like the user interface being new it seems just a tad buggy
I'm sure the scanner... is no different than 17.
