After applying KB4012215, and the obligatory reboot, my Dell T1650 with E3-1270 V2 (IVB)'s CPU fan (I think, as opposed to the power fan) kicked into a whinny turbo high gear.
At first I thought it was just one of those things that happen from time to time for 30 seconds max. But it lasted an undying 12 minutes!
Another reboot the same thing.
So I went into BIOS, and turned off Hyperthreading, Turbo, Speedstep, and maybe "C-states"? I can't remember the exact boxes I unticked. After that the speeding fan stopped.
Then I re-enabled Turbo, and the super-spinning fan whinnying returned and stayed just like before, although this time only after log-on.
I turned off Turbo again, and the fan was back to being quiet.
I was in a rush to leave office so I didn't bother re-enabling every other tick I unchecked above to isolate it down.
Anyway, this does not seem to be a coincidence to me.
Was there some vague expectation that MS was going to "optimize" sumthin' for Ryzen? Did they optimize my IVB, too, which kicked up the fan?
If it was just an isolated hiccup on my gracefully aging Dell T1650, then I can live with the loss of "Turbo". It is an office workstation anyway so I don't need Turbo, or even hyper-threading. I need stability, cool, and quiet.
