    March 21st 2017 KB4012218 Preview of Monthly Rollup for Windows 7 SP1

    This update includes improvements and fixes that were a part of Monthly Rollup KB4012215 (released March 14, 2017). This update also includes these new quality improvements and is a preview of the next Monthly Rollup update. Key changes include:
    • Enabled detection of processor generation and hardware support when PC tries to scan or download updates through Windows Update.
    • Simplified listing of Approved Servers in the Point and Print group policies by allowing wildcards in the server name.
    • Addressed issue that produces corrupt output when using fread() to read data from a pipe. The runtime will sometimes drop the newlines between lines.
    • Addressed issue to update time zone information.
    • Addressed issue with the Local Security Authority Subsystem Service process that crashes on the domain controller when making certain Lightweight Directory Access Protocol requests.

    The March 2017 Preview of Monthly Quality Rollup includes some new improvements and fixes for Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 platforms. We recommend that you apply this quality rollup as part of your regular maintenance routines.

    How to get this update
    Important If you install a language pack after you install this update, you must reinstall this update. Therefore, we recommend that you install any language packs that you need before you install this update. For more information, see Add language packs to Windows.

    Method 1: Windows Update

    This update is provided as an Optional update on Windows Update. For more information about how to run Windows Update, see How to get an update through Windows Update.

    Method 2: Microsoft Update Catalog

    To get the stand-alone package for this update, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website.

    Note You must be running Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or later versions.

    This has got me bent out of shape... :/

    I have FULL driver compatibility and support for my HARDWARE on Windows 7 and cannot fathom why M$ would do such a UNACCEPTABLE change... now I wish I had not done that Windows Update...
    ie. March 21, 2017—KB4012218 (Preview of Monthly Rollup)

    so... I wonder if I'm getting updates now or not... :/

    You'll continue to get updates as long as you don't upgrade you processor to a 7th generation or later.

    and that is the question....?? What generation is my CPU...??

    my further system Specs are CPUz Report:
    AMD FX-9590 @ 4715.73 MHz - CPU-Z VALIDATOR

    I have an
    - AMD FX 9590 8-Core 4.7GHz
    - 2012 ("Bulldozer")
    but according to CPUz my Architecture is Vishera / OR-C0-Step (32 nm)

    according to:
    List of AMD microprocessors - Wikipedia
    Bulldozer Family (Bulldozer, Piledriver, Steamroller, Excavator)


    Bulldozer series CPUs (2011–)
    Vishera (Piledriver core) (launch Q4 2012)

    According to:
    List of AMD FX microprocessors - Wikipedia
    Release date for the FX9590 was (2013-07-06)

    so my CPU is 3+ years old...

    and according to:

    so it claims my CPU is 8th generation... but what is M$ basing its estimate of 7th generation off of and
    how UNFAIR is it... so I still not sure if my CPU is 7th Gen or newer based on M$'s calculations..
    as I built my elite gaming rig June of 2016 using parts from 2012-2013 it would seem... I will have no need to upgrade ^_^...

    but M$ is ***** to do this... making an arbitrary decision like this based on what facts?!
    as my system has FULL driver support for Windows 7 x64...

    Your processor came out in June 2013?

    As far as I understand, it applies to newer hardware like Intel Kaby Lake and AMD Ryzen chips.
    Blocking Windows 7, 8.1 updates for Kaby Lake, Ryzen chips appears imminent | Ars Technica

    hmm.. either June or July depending on how you read that date stamp..

    AMD’s Bristol Ridge is newer says it is the 7th generation.. but uses
    Despite using its older microarchitecture,
    so the AMD FX 9590 could still be 8th Gen even though it was released 3 years before Bristol Ridge...

    So, just to clarify, AMD Bristol Ridge (Excavator architecture) and later, which includes the latest Ryzen (Zen architecture) chips running W7 or W8 will NOT get Windows updates.

    Your processor should get Windows updates as usual.

Why is the KB4012218 considered optional? Is it because I already have the same individual updates installed or is it because they don't apply to my system? And why do they use the word Preview? Is it optional because it's not officially released yet? Like Beta software? All comments that...
