Thanks a lot Anak, very helpful.

So, are MS blocking DDR4 RAM on 7 and 8.1 too? I thought it was just the CPU's they were blocking?

I haven't seen anything about DDR4 itself blocked in win 7 or 8.1. If that happens, I'm getting a lawyer!

I cannot even install this update. It downloads installs successfully, but doesn't show in installed updates. (It installed "successfully" many times. I ran a sfc scan, cleaned the disk and finally did a restore. Nothing works so far.

Phew! I was getting a little nervous then!

I know MS has used some pretty aggressive and annoying tactics to get us all on Windows 10, but I would be switching to Linux tomorrow if they did block all DDR4 RAM!

Still got Windows 7 on three computers. Only one (desktop) has the updating problem.

    Hi,
10 is just an occasional weekend sort of toy I never really use and I don't see that changing anytime soon
2020 is still a heck of a long way down the road :)

I might buy a laptop soon and I may just get a mac the way things are looking in 10 :/
Acer's mother board well that one is the one I'm going to retire I almost did looking at newegg they had a combo mobo-cpu deal just under 1k
Microcenter has 3 open box deals for the x99 deluxe 2 one at 350 and 2 others for 315 :)

Went PC shopping with my brother yesterday. He had every intention of buying a Windows laptop. Ended up buying a Mac! I had a play around with it while setting it up and came home considering one myself! I'd miss building my own PC though.

I still have loads of Retail versions of 7 and 8.1 so I've just got to make sure the chip I buy for my next build won't be blocked by MS. I always get a good few years out of my builds. I've never felt the need to upgrade everything regularly.

I used to recommend PCs to friends but I now recommend that they get Macs.

You're welcome, and please slow down, your reading conjecture into what I wrote, nowhere did I state that MS was blocking ddr4 only the use of skylake-s and ddr4 that would cause the block. So no, their not blocking ddr4 ram and it is just some of the latest 6th gen cpu's that they are blocking.

If I may try to clear the muddied waters. What I read but still unable to find is, it is the combination of ddr4 and skylake-s that will create the block.

    • If for example you run ddr3 and skylake-s you won't be blocked.

    • If you run ddr4 and any other 5th gen cpu you won't be blocked.

    • Again, nothing that I have found indicates that MS is blocking any ddr4 ram.
