Thanks Ethel I'd already ran the malicious software tool which is why it didn't appear in the screenshot.

Does anyone know if MS includes the hotfixes for it's defective cumulative updates, in the following months cumulative updates?

I have seen them re-issue a corrective update, even before the next regular Patch tuesday, but as always this depends on how they class the issue with the original. Given the huge user base, Software & hardware variation involved with Windows you will always see a percentage of systems that have issues with any particular update.

There is, I would expect, a percentage below which the answer from microsoft will be Uninstall the problem update, above this they will issue a new update which corrects the errors. They will often include a corrective part for those with issues quietly at some time later without a lot of fanfare

What this trigger is I have no idea and may also be more related to the amount of press coverage the issue gets rather than the actual number of systems affected

Just me, but I do an reflect image before hand and them let the updates download. Any problems and I do a restore, with Macrium it is pretty easy. I keep at least 1 yr of images in the odd chance I would have to go way back.

I pretty much do the same. I also wait until at least Saturday before I download and install them.

I usually wait a while and I check out various forums to see if people have started complaining.
I haven't installed the August Security Update yet.

Backup images and backups of those backups, have "devoured" several of my multi-TB HDDs.

I keep Master images of my original clean installations, just in case I need to "start again from scratch".
I also keep special images, like one from just before the CPU Blocking fiasco (earlier this year).

Don't bother with other forums...just come here, we have several people that specialise in complaining.

Complaining vs debate ... that can be a bit of a definition.

Pretty much always, if there is a problem with an update, someone will mention it here before the Saturday after update Tuesday. Often MS will pull and fix any wonky updates by Saturday. I wouldn't wait much longer than a week to download and install updates.

Those images sure do add up in a hurry. To keep from going bankrupt from buy expensive storage (I'm using only SSDs now), I set my retention rules to only six weeks worth of images (I only make an image before or after, sometimes both, I make a change on my computer and install or delete a program). I also copy the first image of every month to a separate folder and keep those indefinitely (for now; eventually I'll have to cull some).

I do the same. I keep my images on my computer for convenience but I also back them up to externally stored, bare backup drives along with the rest of my data (yes, I'm a paranoid coward).
