Improvements and fixes

This non-security update includes quality improvements. No new operating system features are being introduced in this update. Key changes include:
  • Addressed issue where applications based on the Microsoft JET Database Engine (Microsoft Access 2007 and older or non-Microsoft applications) fail when creating or opening Microsoft Excel .xls files. The error message is, “Unexpected error from external database driver (1). (Microsoft JET Database Engine)".
For more information about the resolved security vulnerabilities, see the Security Update Guide.

Known issues in this update

Symptom
After installing KB4041681, package users may see an error dialog that indicates that an application exception has occurred when closing some applications. This can affect applications that use mshtml.dll to load web content. The failure only occurs when a process is already shutting down, and doesn't impact application functionality.

Workaround
Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.

How to get this update

To get the standalone package for this update, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website.

It's probably only available from the Windows Update Catalogue because it's only a fix for some older MS software. The wording below, which is copied from Post #1, explains this.

"This non-security update includes quality improvements. No new operating system features are being introduced in this update. Key changes include:

Seems strange that they've chosen to omit this one from Windows Update though. Even though Office 2007 is EOL they still published an update through WU for Publisher 2007 crashes. I received it a few days ago as I'm still using Office 2007. Running it alongside LibreOffice which I'll be fully switching over to in the near future.

You'd think they'd also make this available through WU if there's an issue with Excel files not opening.
